Derek's Jake the Peg

Post by internet_nobody on Sat Jul 12, 2008 6:24 pm

Here he is in all his glory!

And my chickies -
Bigger ones.

Littler ones + bobs, please note the "dead" chicks are just sleeping!!

And what has become of the really really ginger chick -

He's on the left, looks like just another shade of range with lots of extra pale bars on the feathers.

Hi,

I would just like to make it clear, this is not a home bred bird, I bought the eggs from ebay. ( It'll be my last time I buy eggs from this person!)

Yes, this chick was reared in my smaller brooder, and being on the floor, I never noticed the defect. While ringing the chicks last night, I noticed it had an extra limb.So I kept it just to be photographed.( It would of been culled afterwards)

I mention it in the chat rom last evening, and Emma asked me to post it(Jokingly), I did better than that, I got it personally hand deliviered, by a young man who had come up from Coventry to pick up one of my whippet puppies.(Many thanks to Dave)

Having lived for two weeks with no visual effects, I expect this chick to live to a nice ripe old age.

Derek.

Looking at it I don't think its a genetic defect (not that I intend to breed from him - but for Derek don't worry about breeding from his siblings), it looks like somewhere the patterning in the leg went wrong and caused a foot to pop out of his thigh. Having seen him walk around it could easily be missed in a large batch of chicks - he's just a bit wobbly, but the foot is tucked under him and can't easily be seen when he stands! In my 3rd year at uni I did a module on development and must have read 30-40 papers on developmental "whoopsies" in chicks, it looks a lot like the chicks with double wings look, but on the back leg of course.

Hopefully Jake will thrive, and he will live out his days with my other "wobble" birds - the ones affected by the A&P chick crumb.

Aww he looks so cute!
Thats really nice of you to look after them Emma.
What happened to the chicks affected by A & P chick crumbs? Is A & P not a good make of feed?

A few of us have had chicks with legs go funny between 2-4 weeks, and each time we were giving the A&P crumb. A&P adult feed seems absolutely fine - I used it until switching to quail pellets after finally finding a supplier and all my birds seemed in perfect health, however I wouldn't try the chick crumb again, it probably is just coincidence, but its a bit odd that all these batches of unrelated birds are affected.

Here are a few topics about the affected chicks -
