My first chicks

Post by Ratchett on Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:06 pm

My first chick that are healthy.
Tried to hatch 6 a fews weeks ago but only 2 hatched and one was deformed and the other's legs were splayed.
I put 14 eggs in this time 4 have hatched this morning 3 healthy one with bad legs.
Hopefully the others will hatch tomorrow and will all be healthy.

How do you fix the legs with masking tape? and how long does it normally take?

its easy. if they have curled feet cut a tiny square of tape and straighten the foot out and stick it to the bottom then stick another peice on top.dont press to hard. they look like little shoes. splayed legs cut a longish piece of tape, afew mm thick then rap it around one leg and then round the other with a gap in between like hand cuffs. it only takes about 4 hours, its very quick. i'll post some pics for you.Someone else on here suggested it and its worked for me.

this is abit fiddly to do and your chick will probably fall about for the first few minutes, dont worry, try keep it on for 4 hours. this chick is now perfect.

lovely little chick if that still doesnt help remove the flooring of your incubator and try some multi grip or like a lap- tray matting for tables and eating. ive only ever had 1 curled toes and the rest have always been fine.

Depends how much time you got. my one fell about for hours so i kept picking it up and putting it up right.just see how it goes.still not sure my little one will survive even though hes eating and drinking he keeps rolling over. good luck.

Yes its a homemade incubator. made a plywood box then lined it with bubble wrap and card box with a sheet of perspex on the top. theres a 60 watt bulb over the incubator. was ok untill the 4th one hatched now lost temp in it but cant understand why.
