Escaping/Flying Quails how do I clip their wings?

Post by Quail fascination on Fri Aug 01, 2008 9:47 pm

Sometimes when opening the quails hutch door they try & escape. One of them today flew right over my 6ft conifers through to next doors garden. Luckily my neighbour heard me panicking & was in her garden and managed to put a box quickly over the quail. Now I am worried they will keep doing this & next time wont be so lucky.
Is it possible to clip their wings so they cannot fly away?
Would appreciate any tips. Shocked

I have tried clipping the wings of my cpqs before and, while it kept them from gaining altitude, they still try to fly and sometimes even manage to reach the windows (since I keep them inside). I have since altered my cage so that I have a large section and a small section, each with a separate door and a sliding divider so that I can herd all of them into one side or the other while I'm cleaning, feeding, etc. without having to worry about them escaping and flying around the house.

I clipped the wings of mine like this: http://www.backyardchickens.com/graphics/wingclipping.gif. Clipping the wing on only one side will unbalance their flight, whereas clipping on both sides will reduce the height that they can fly, but is usually not enough to keep them from attempting to escape. I think it is always worth a try, however, since their feathers will grow back the next time they molt, and quail don't usually tend to fly around very much, anyway.

I thought the idea of wing clipping was only to do one side, otherwise like you said they can fly slightly.
If you only clip one wing, they won't be able to fly at all. It worked on my chickens Very Happy
