However, i was wondering, in the meantime would it be fine to put the female cali in with the japanese quail who are contained in a larger aviary? I am concerned that it may cause ...

This is propably a silly question but...

I was just looking around on google at pictures of Coturnix coturnix (the European common quail) and Coturnix japonica (Japs) and I was wondering is there actually any difference in the appearance of these two species?

If there isn't how do we know that our birds are infact japs and not European ones that were caught years ago... ?

I guess it wouldn't really make much difference but I was just curious

My new house arrived today, to replace my 4x4 run and nesting box. On top of the run sits a 4ft hutch with 2 japs and a bob (the bob was beaten up by his bob buddies, so was relegated to a hutch). I bought the hutch cheap, and it needed a new roof, which I added, but didn't screw down to leave it easier to clean out. Thinking the lid was bound to come off when we moved it I decided i'd grab Bob Monkhouse and put him indoors while we were fiddling round...needless to say he escaped, shot into ...

I needed a quickly built house for some mice I'm picking up later today (will update with pictures )Here's the result.

I cut a hole in the lid, using a heated up knife (use an old one, it gets messy!) And then fastened some wire on using cable ties.

You could probably make one similar for poorly quails or a brooder, it doesnt take long and works out quite a lot cheaper than a cage.

sorry another stupid question, if i put the kids toys this side of the swings i have enough room on the wood bark to put a huge coup and 6-8ft run. so the question is would it be o.k just to plant it straight on top. i was thinking that raking over the bark in the run would be sufficient the coup is 7ft wide with solid floor. this would be for bantams, ( the quail when i get them all will be in the house/ run you can see and i also have 4 x4ft hutches the other side of the shed if i get too carried ...

The title says it all really. Had a chick hatch out with spraddle leg, and on a bit of advice I culled it. I Know that a responsible breeder should never allow a bird like this to be part of the breeding flock. This chick did not develop spraddle leg, it hatched out that way. The odds that it was genetic are very high. Still broke my heart to do it. Open message to all faced with a similar situation: Do what you must, its alright to feel bad or sad about it, but if its neccesary dont shy away ...
