My last batch of japanese coturnix hatched over a week ago-- they already have feathers growing on their wings. Along with them in the incubator was a single bobwhite egg, which I turned/stop turning a few days later. The bobwhite was due to hatch nearly 5 days ago. At 25 days with no hatch, I unplugged the incubator, assuming that the chick was dead. Because I was too busy with school this week, I simply left the incubator sitting with the egg, waiting to clean it out later and put it all away... ...

my two quails are living together in a 4ft by 2ft by 21" cage.... i've only had them 48hrs but today Perth has a bald head...there are a few feathers strewn around the cage and they all come from Perth...is this likely to be fighting?

they are both about four weeks old or so i'm told.

they are both always sat next to or near each other whenever i look in on them and they seem happy to eat and drink and scratch around together.

Hi,

This is propably a silly question but...

I was just looking around on google at pictures of Coturnix coturnix (the European common quail) and Coturnix japonica (Japs) and I was wondering is there actually any difference in the appearance of these two species?

If there isn't how do we know that our birds are infact japs and not European ones that were caught years ago... ?

I guess it wouldn't really make much difference but I was just curious

Escaping/Flying Quails how do I clip their wings?

Sometimes when opening the quails hutch door they try & escape. One of them today flew right over my 6ft conifers through to next doors garden. Luckily my neighbour heard me panicking & was in her garden and managed to put a box quickly over the quail. Now I am worried they will keep doing this & next time wont be so lucky.

Is it possible to clip their wings so they cannot fly away?

Would appreciate any tips.

The other 22 are due out 4 days from then. Should I put the eggs in something to keep them warm and sterilise everything? Or is that to much of a risk with the eggs so close to hatch?

Hi can anyone tell me how to wash eggs properly?
I just recieved some through the post and although they were extremely well packed nearly half of them have broken and have leaked all over the good ones. If not washed could this affect fertility? And could it still affect fertility even if they are washed?
I'm so annoyed. It looks like the postman must have jumped on them or something.

This is my first hatch. I have 8 5-week-old Cortunix. I handled them a lot, but they still are very flighty and hard to get a hold of. Now that they are bigger, I am having trouble getting a hold of them. Since I want to start sexing them next week (they will be old enough then I think) so that I can separate them into two different groups (it seems to me the cage I have them in is getting a bit "tight" in the space department) I want to be able to handle them correctly to vent ...

How high can a clipped / non clipped Quail fly???

Hi all,

It won't be long now before my little eggs hatch *hopefully* and i'm trying to get everything ready for them. I've got my brooder ready and a rabbit hutch and run but i've also been fencing the top of my garden off for a little veggie patch. Would be it possible to have 'free range' quails at the here where they would have much more space (i'm willing to sacrifice a few veggies for a greedy quail or two) or will they be able to fly over the fence?

Thanks
