Just thought I'd post some pictures of my first quail house, Its a 2 storey rabbit hutch that I bought on eBay. Top floor is 6'x2'x2' with a 6'x4'x2' run underneath. My Quail got used to using the ramp between levels in no time. I've placed large branches, flowerpots and plastic igloo's (the sort rabbits use) for the girls to hide and nest in - which they do use, Jackie always uses the same igloo to lay her eggs and when not harassing the girls my boys lay flat out, half in half out of the flowerpots..........

Here are some pictures of my winter quarters for the quails, set up yesterday. The children have given up(been turfed out of ) their den/shed and my lovely hubby ran a cable out for a timer light to extend the daylight. Essentials include calor gas heater for me and a comfy chair for brew time! Access to run on grass available when warmer and drier. The 9 girls are happy on the top two layers and the three boys are sulking on the bottom.

Ordered Gravel last week to try and make the front of the house look a bit tidier - originally ordered 3 tonnes, but when it was delivered thought no way was that enough so, phoned and got them to send down the same again Over the weekend I've graveled the front garden, the aviary, the sectioned marked off as the new duck pen and a path up to the quail shed and I think I've still got a 4 tonne mountain of gravel left

Here's my aviary surrounded by 6" of gravel

Top hutch complete - more or less. There will be another brooder hutch below and storage space at floor level. (I've got some perspex screens that slot in behind the doors for when the chicks are really tiny to stop draughts).

Here are my growers modeling it for you. (Yes they have got muddy feet cos it was lovely and sunny I put them out on the lawn in the warmest part of the day - they loved ...

Not quails!

But these are the straw tunnels i bought from my pet shop, they are meant for rabbits, but my quails adore them. They either all try to get in them at once, stand on top of them and jump on the others or run through them at full pelt!!! They are great though because they are all woven straw the gang can peck at them too, so it keeps them very busy.

Since a few people have been asking about rabbit hutches lately I thought i'd show what I have waiting for my outdoor birds...

Firstly the hutch and run, modeled by Dan the Jumbo:

The previous occupant was a spoiled bunny - upstairs is carpeted! That'll be coming out as i'm sure the quail will ruin it. The back of the run and half of a side are boarded already, i'll do the other half in clear plastic, same for the top over the front of the run.
Well the bob's have spent their first night in the new house its 7.5' x 3.5' x 5' (@ highest part), I've mixed my 2 groups - so far with no problems, but don't know if the house is going to be big enough for all of them, but there not over crowded, So will need to track down the same type of house but from a different supplier. (Please note that the birds do have plenty of room, I kept chancing them to get them in the photos )

Shed as bought - bit tatty looking but sound

And progress so far

Just enough room left to get and clean out but hopefully this will keep it nice and cosy. And I have an incentive not to get fat as I wont be able to get in the door!

I'll add in some updated photos as we go in case it's helpful for anyone else. No matter how quickly it's built it'll never quick enough!
