Hi,

The quails that we hatched about a month ago are coming on nicely. A 7/7 hatch in our r-com mini, 1 died. It looks like we have 5 out of 6 females (apart from 1 unknown Range).

We already have 3 adults - 2 females & 1 male in their own custom 6x4shed with low windows etc etc (spoilt !). We have now got the babies sucessfully out into the shed loft conversion with a little heat at night.

My question is when would be a good time to introduce the youngsters to the existing ...

My new house arrived today, to replace my 4x4 run and nesting box. On top of the run sits a 4ft hutch with 2 japs and a bob (the bob was beaten up by his bob buddies, so was relegated to a hutch). I bought the hutch cheap, and it needed a new roof, which I added, but didn't screw down to leave it easier to clean out. Thinking the lid was bound to come off when we moved it I decided i'd grab Bob Monkhouse and put him indoors while we were fiddling round...needless to say he escaped, shot into ...

The title says it all really. Had a chick hatch out with spraddle leg, and on a bit of advice I culled it. I Know that a responsible breeder should never allow a bird like this to be part of the breeding flock. This chick did not develop spraddle leg, it hatched out that way. The odds that it was genetic are very high. Still broke my heart to do it.
Hi,

After reading an article on Quail in one of the smallholding magazines, decided to find out some more info about them, and have now decided to get some.

I found this forum through Google and have read through a lot of posts, but there are just a few things I need to get clear.

Their basic diet is similar to chickens? Do they prefer to be out on grass, and if so, do they make a similar mess to chickens (ie move run every couple of days)?

Should they have a nest box and is it essential ...

Hello! I'm new to the world of Quails and i'm wondering if someone could help me out?

Please could someone tell me the type and sexes of these?

Does anyone know how long it will take them to start laying again after they have been moved roughly? i heard they might stop laying at this time of year as the days are getting shorter?

Thanks again to everyone on this forum! it has really helped me to learn about Quails and help me to decide to get them.

Best Way to Dispatch Adult (eating Quail)

Hello,

Looking for opinion on the best way to murder my quail for eating.

One way i found somewhere on the net was to hold them upside down and snip their heads off with sharp scissors.

Well call me a girl but i can't do that!

I lkie the idea of gassing! but does that affect the meat?

What other ways do you suggest?????

Is this true? If so, would i have to register because i have 20+ quail and 30+ zebra finches, or does it only count for 50 of each species?

I hope that makes sense.

Also, how do i register?

Not the same as A&M's at all, smaller and I think the skin pigment is different as well. Just wondered if you have them in the uk and if you do what are they called there?

I've been giving my quails wax worms over the last week or so as I normally end up having loads left as my son's toads don't eat many at a time and they end up cocooned before I can get them to eat them.

I have only 3 cocooned so I thought I might as well give it a go and breed them. I had everything!

So we will just have to wait and see if it works.

I found it on this website - not sure if it's someone's on here.

Hi,

Due to the fact of very high mortality, I've had to stop my egg trial.

To recap, 26 normal hens were hatched on the 13th November 2007. These were placed in an 8' x 6' shed. The lighting hours after 6 weeks of age was kept at 15 hours minimum.

The first egg layed was 31st December 2007.

I had to end the trial, due to the fact eggs are getting larger and there is a high mortality rate over the last 10 days, this is due to egg binding and prolapses.

Here are the results:-

Trapped one in the morning (pretty young cub, but never mind). Went rabbiting with a friend last night in the grounds of nearby house. We shot one rabbit and, almost immediately, a fox came to pick it up (easy takeaway) and met her maker. Then straight away, another fox popped up from nowhere and met the same fate. ...
