I have 40 or so chicks at 4 weeks old all fine and healthy however one is half the size, maybe even smaller. It seems to have stopped growing but seems happy enough and sticks up for itself too. I have a couple of theories but don't want to suggest anything yet as I'd like people to consider this with an open mind. Thanks in advance people!

How many eggs do they normally lay before going to sit? I don't want to take them out if she's likely to decide that tomorrow is the day to start trying to hatch them (i'd feel mean, she's made them such a nice nest), but likewise I don't want to leave them if its unlikely she will go broody!

I just joined this group today so I'm sorry if this question has been asked a million times but I was wondering if anyone has breed two different types of quails to create a hybrid. For example a mexican speckle to a Japanese tuxedo.

Any info on hybrids would be interesting to hear.

I stumbled upon this by chance and thought I would share it. It's a paper from Japan written in English (thankfully). It describes some strains of quails. Most are obviously for research of genetic conditions, but some of the traits are related to colours. Interestingly several sex-linked/auto-sexing traits are listed (in page 12); brown/cinnamon (not sure if they are separate or same trait) and a form of albinism.

It also describes a strain S (silver) as incompletely dominant (page 4). It ...

Is it possible to encourage bobwhites to sit and hatch their own eggs, I'd love to be able to raise some naturally, but most of the info on the net suggests that bobwhites that were hatched in an incubator will have no parenting skills. What have your experiences been?

I'm new to quails, but I've been doing some research on the different colour forms. I have seen references to "ginger" and "red" forms, but not seen them being sold anywhere. Anyone seen these?

Is this a distinct colour mutation or the result of a combination of existing colour factors (e.g. Fawn/Gold or Fawn/Range)? I suggest Fawn (or ...

I put in 8 jumbo eggs and 7 were fertile and 7 hatched!!! I was surprised as I've read fertility reduces alot a 6 months and mine are coming up to this plus the fact that they are jumbos so not so fertile as normal quail due to being overweight fatties. So do you think fertility is linked to age of quail or when they start laying as mine have just started to lay in the last few wks so they eggs will be the first produced by quail and therefore young?? Wajda think???

You have to set it on the finest spray you can. Hope this helps someone it certainly helped me...............cliftonh..................

Ive just hatched out quite a few White Quail and they are now 5/6 weeks old and one or two are starting to be a little dominant Any ideas on best method of sexing at this age? I have tried the foam test on a few but proves inconclusive or maybe they are a little too young yet.
Any advice appreciated.
