FEEDING QUAIL

Game & quail pellets can be hard to come by, so most hobby kept quail are fed on chicken/poultry feed of 20-18% protein, which the birds do very well on. Here's a quick guide to determine which feed is appropriate for the birds age -

Hatch to 3/4 weeks - Chick crumb

3/4 weeks to 6 weeks - Grower Pellets

6 weeks onwards - Layer/Breeder pellets or Layer mash

It should be noted that newly hatched quail are tiny, so chick crumb may need to be ground down for ...

Percentage Weight Loss

Quail eggs need to lose 11-13% of their weight during incubation. This formula can be used to calculate weight loss -

% weight loss at (Day 10) = Day 0 egg weight (-) minus Day 10 egg weight (/) divided by Day 0 egg weight (X) multiply by 100

Average daily loss = % weight loss (Day 10) divided (/) by 10

Projected loss at 15 days (C.coturnix pipping) = Average daily loss X 15

To Calculate Fertility Percentage

Number of eggs set = a Number ...

Normal type Japanese quail are easy to sex from about 3 weeks onwards, the reddish brown chest of the male starts to become noticeable. The female will retain her speckled chest and throat feathers.

Once they are adult and in breeding condition, from about 6 weeks onwards, the sexual behaviour and foam ball production of the male will be apparent.

Italian Golden hens have a distinctive face mask.

The coloured varieties of Coturnix, such as English White, Range, Tuxeo do not have an apparent ...

Genetics of Colour Mutation in Coturnix Quail (Keeping Quail 4th Edition by Katie Thear)

Pigments called melanins determine the plumage colour and markings. Depending on the genetic structure, these pigments arepresent in variousdilutions and ratios. Some of the genes are dominant and will therefore appear more frequently in crossings. Others are recessive and will tendto be masked by the dominant factors, but appearing in small numbers. Others still, are incompletely dominant with the ...
