Wow! Why? I hear you ask

Well firstly I am full time carer for both my parents and secondly my Dad has been helping me.

Its a big achievement for us both and neither of us knows exactly what we are doing so I thought you might like a laugh

Well my first job, after buying the smaller shed and transporting it home myself was to remove my 12 budgies from the old aviary.

Hi,

I'm new to keeping quail and will be buying some soon . I plan to keep them in an aviary which I'm currently building. What would be the best thing for the floor? I don't like the idea of concrete, as it seems a bit cruel. As the aviary will be huge for just 4 japs and some cockatiels, I wondered whether grass might survive? If not, would bark chippings work.

Also, are elderflower plants ok for quail, as I didn't want to get rid of the ones that are already in the aviary. And for cockatiels?

One small injury with a cut head [cleaned and disinfected the wound and then put on a bit of antiseptic cream, seems to be healing really well].

Have one slight problem though, on the first and second nights I manually popped them back into the new coop ...

I've been looking through the housing thread as I hope to keep quail in the near future. I see that forum users have a variety of arks, hutches, cages etc.

However I noticed some of the hutches have felt roofs. These are to be avoided with chickens as they provide a great hiding place for red mite, which seem to be on the increase and are hard to get rid of.

According to my Katie Thear Quail book, red mite are also a problem for quail.

So, do you all think these felt roofs are OK ? ...

I'm just interested to see what people use as an minimum or ideal breeding ratio, and whats the minimum amount of space they give the birds - i'm thinking useable space, so please subtract the space taken up by feeder + drinker (or state that you have ignored that ). I know a lot of people keep big breeding groups but it would still be interesting to see, since i'm really only just starting with directed breeding (before I wasn't too bothered about fertility - but now i'm trying the tux range ...

All the ones that I have seen are just rabbit hutches with a run. There appear to be also some fundamental design fault with most readily available houses.

Most use mineral felt for the roof.

Most use T and G board or shiplap for the walls.

Most of the felt on the roofs is held in place with a timber batten around the edge.

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if a 6x4 shed would be suitable for about 6 californian quail? They would have hemcore on the floor with loads of perches and CD's/mirrors and a dustbath. Would it be Ok to keep them in that perminently? They would have all the out-doorsy things, just inside. I only worry about them being outside at night, and with having cats, I worry about them having a heart attack Plus we get the odd escaped dog in the garden, which can be pretty excitve, especially when they ...

Hi All,

I thought this might be helpful to someone after a useful quail or chicken house.

I thought these would be great for quails, defently the flight breeds bobwhites, californians etc.

Anyway people take a look, there on ebay at £5.00 per house, bidding though.

Do you just leave them to it? I don't want to stress them out by shutting them up all night, but equally I don't want them to get too cold. They would have a perspex roof on the run, so the rain wouldn't be too bad.

Also, what do you all house your quail in? I've seen people using rabbit hutches, but do you have a run attached? ...

We would like to keep Califonians and Japanese/Italian. Firstly, I know californians are very flighty, so are they not "ground dwellers"?
I have a small paddock next to my house, I keep chickens already but they are in a paddock further away. If I want to keep some cortunix quail and have lots of wood and wire what is the best type of housing ie ark or aviary, I would like them to be out on the grass in the run area - should I wire the base of the run? What is the best size wire for the run? Do you need to move the run often, as with chickens? I was hoping to have 12 to 24 quail.

Thank you for reading

Okay, this may be a really daft question... We haven't actually got our quail yet cos we want to make sure we've got all the facilities in place first - especially with two inquisitive Irish Wolfhounds, Clydesdale horses, a border collie and a cat! What we want to know is, having had chickens who are quite happy to go back into their housing at night, are quail equally easy to shut away each night or do they have access to an aviary 24/7? Any ideas or advice welcome
