How long do quails live/lay?

Post by Crystal on Tue Apr 15, 2008 5:51 pm

Hi There everyone,
I have a question.....2 actually!

What is a quails natural life expectancy?
AND
How long do they lay eggs for?

My quails were hatched in '06 by me, and have given an egg a day since they were around 9weeks old, light permitting,
but since December '07 I've had nothing, my chickens on the other hand are popping them out!

Hope someone can help.

Hi Crystal

Welcome to the forum. The average life expectancy for a captive Japanese Quail is 3-4 years, the oldest recorded that I've found on the Internet is 6 years. I have no idea how long they keep laying for though, I just presumed they kept laying until they passed.

Hi,

I would think the japanese quail will lay very late in life, they live upto and beyond 4 years, I believe.Later in life, expect them to slow down somewhat, you may get 2/3 eggs per week.

I assume your birds are out doors with no added light?.If this is so, they'll come into lay very soon, there is just about 14 hours light. My outdoor quails have just come into lay, from being POL pullets.

Derek.

Hi,

My male quail Wallace is at least 5 years old, so an old man, but he still likes the ladies and is eherm shall we say very active for his age!!

My older girls are 2 and they have stopped laying right now, but they are just finishing moulting so i suspect that has alot to do with it. My younger ladies are laying at the minute, but have only just started so they are a bit hit and miss.

Hugs
