Average egg weight
Hi everyone,
My husband purchased 8 quail this morning that are 6-7 weeks old. This afternoon one of them laid an egg and it weighs 19 grams. Is this small, big, average as we've never kept quail before and haven't a clue! I'd never even seen a quail egg before!! Not sure what breed but possibly look like Japenese quail. Is the ark they're in ok for size for 8 hens (it measures about 3m x 1m)? The ark is in the chicken run but the birds can't get at each other...
Thanks for any help - will get photos and try to put them on for breed type...

Re: Average egg weight
Hi Sarah,
At 19 grams it's massive if it's from a normal japanese quail.
The Average weight is around 12-13g in my groups.
I expect your is going to be a double yolker.
Thats a good size ark for 8 birds.

Re: Average egg weight
I thought it might be a biggun' coz the shape is slightly bumped at the narrow end, like you get on double yolker chicken eggs. Aside from size, what are the differences between normal jap quail and the jumbo ones? Haven't weighed these ones but they seem minature - one could easily fit on the palm of my hand, with room to spare.

Re: Average egg weight
Hi Derek,
Forgot to ask - how many do you reckon would be happy in an arc that size then? Not that it seems to matter with the little ones, but its about half a meter high, but lower at the sides as its a toblerone shape.
Caught one of the "hens" having a little extra curricular activity with one of the others so I guess there's at least one male in the group. Having read other topics, we did spot a white "foamy" poo or something earlier. (unless its gay?!!)

Re: Average egg weight
Hi Sarah,
Your ark is about 27ft², if the ark has a sleeping area you could keep upto 13 birds in there, each bird having 2ft² of floor space.
Derek.

Re: Average egg weight
Thanks Derek, that's good to know. Yes, the dimensions I gave do include a sleeping area which I forgot to mention...sorry! Thanks for the info - perhaps down to the market for more? Paid 2.20 € each - is that average?
Thank you Suz, that's really kind. Will try to get photos tomorrow for you. As far as I can tell, two of the birds are goldy coloured (with stripes) and the rest are cream with black stripes. The male is one of the gold ones...

Re: Average egg weight
Thats dirt cheap - I saw some at a sale today for £8 each (which is a rip off), looks like you got a nice bargain!
Re: Average egg weight
Really? I didn't realise they were that much! I can see why people hatch their own then!!

Re: Average egg weight
Hi Suz,
Finally got round to taking those photos. The first is obviously of the 19g egg next to chicken eggs. In one of the others, you can see the boy as he's golden in colour with brown behind the eyes. Hopefully he's the only one! Are they the Italian strain of Japanese quail?
