say hello to my latest hatch... Shaolin (or Shazza). Unfortunatley he/she was the only one from a group of 6 eggs I bought that hatched successfully (one was cracked when I received it, 3 infertile and one dead in shell). The eggs were smaller and narrow/thinner than others I've subsequently bought. He/she was extremely weak from hatch. It was touch and go for a few days, but I've been hand feeding him my special duck formula (boiled pudding rice, lentils, boiled egg, soya meal) blended to a milky puree. I've had to isolate him from the other ducks in a special plastic container, but they seem to encourage her/him by their antics. I've got another 4 Mandarin duck eggs from another source in the incubator due to hatch at the end of the week, so hopefully Shazza will have more company.

Yeah, I wasn't going to hatch any "ornamental" pets. I want some animals to provide eggs and occassionally meat (quails), but the little mini Appleyards really melted me away. So I thought I might try a few ornamental ducks. I'm totally hooked now and thinking of converting a large polytunnel with big pond in it into an aviary.
