Hi All,
Newbie to the list and new to raising Quail too.

For my Quail I have a huge chicken coop [takes up to 18hens] and a ten foot part covered run that houses just a small group [at the moment!] of CPQ's but I also keep chickens in a separate coop and run elsewhere in the garden.

I'm actually hatching some Crested Cream Legbar chicken eggs at the moment but wondered if it would be OK to pop them in with my Quail after the chicks are out of the brooder but are still small so that they don't get bullied by the older existing hens in my current pen. Was thinking that it might be OK to do this for a few weeks when they first go outside?

Can anyone offer any advice please....I'd be grateful for help
Also....sorry....probably another daft question but if you raise common quail would they survive if they got out or were released into the wild or would they have difficulty finding food or be attacked by wild birds?

I ask as I live in a very rural area surrounded by fields and woodland that is stuffed with Quail
Thanks in advance
Lisa-Dawn

Welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I have no experience of keeping chicken chicks with CPQs (I only keep Coturnix and Bobwhites). I've occassionally kept a few ducklings with mature quail, but only for a very short period.

I've never seen wild Coturnix in this country, but that might be because I live in London. Razz

I would think Coturnix quail that escaped could survive in the wild, but I would think that they would be easy prey to all sorts of things. That's if they don't drown in the nearest patch of water (they aren't particularly clever).

Thanks Bob and Andoy,
I might try popping them in and see what occurs....I work from home so will be able to keep a good eye on them and remove them if it looks like there's any trouble.

Thanks too for the comments about surviving in the wild.

I keep Bobwhites & Japs with mini Silkies, everything was going great until very recently. The Silkies have reached sexually maturity, the cocks have taken to trying tread the quail with dire consequences, and the girls seem to be getting rougher with the quail too throwing the quail out of the way if their in a mood.

I don't hold out much hope for CPQ or Jap escapees as there too domesticated, any of mine have been picked off by cats or found dead in neighbouring gardens even though there is an adequate natural food source. (we have wild populations of E.M.Quail, partridge and other game birds in and around the village) But, rumour control has it my Bobs are still being heard in the fields behind the school, so I'm hoping they'll survive the winter.

The camera is dying I think, but it was an old picture anyway Suzzz. P.S. Try putting your Cali's in with the silkies, then they will know who's boss. Twisted Evil
