Crowing and introducing chicks Empty Crowing and introducing chicks

Post by Snoozypaws3000 Sun Aug 24, 2008 11:45 am

I'm sorry about this...me yet again, sorry for all th questions but I've not been able to find this info in the books I have.

Do male CPQs and Japs crow and if so is it loud and persistent? [I had a white chicken cockerel that used to start roaring his head off at 4 am in the Summertime for hours and it was pretty deafening. Even though I live in the country I wouldn't want to annoy the neighbours or keep waking at 4am!

Secondly, I intend to try and hatch some Coturnix eggs and am all set up with incubator and brooder but how do I go about introducing the chicks to the existing flock?

With my hens I normally either segregate with wire for a few days so they can see one another [I also introduce just a few new ones at any one time so that the others don't feel too threatened....it also seems to make the pecking order procedure far less boistrous]

Sometimes, if the new additions are young I pop them into the coop at night and release the entire flock for an hour or two before dusk the next day, this also seems to work quite well.

Finally, can I put Japs in with my CPQs or would the smaller birds get bullied?

Again, sorry for asking so many questions!
Thanks again
Lisa-Dawn

Yes the males of both species make a crow of sorts .... the CPQ's call is a strange quiet sound (it reminds me of a strong gale blowing Embarassed) and some male Japs can be both loud & persistent but its nothing like a chicken cockerels crow but again its a hard sound to describe.

You shouldn't introduce new quail to an existing flock until they're fully mature, otherwise they're likely to be raped & harassed and probably killed. but once mature a segregation cage or introduction on neutral territory seems the way to go.

I personally wouldn't keep CPQ & Japs together after having the horrible experience of waking up to a blood bath when 4week old CPQ chicks pecked into the ears killing the much bigger, same aged Jumbo Japs that they were being brooded with. But I'm sure some folk must keep them together successfully.

I found that my Jap males crowing just before 5am a bit too much. I had about 2 dozen in a bachellor group. Separating them from the ladies makes it worse. I find the crowing a bit like a hard rasping sound. For a while, I collected them evrery night and stuck them in a big cardboard box that was totally dark. When I got a bit tired of doing that, I culled the lot and I'm still working my way thru different quail recipees... yum! rabbit

I hatched 2 girls and 2 boys, I finally gave away the boys because the crowing was persistant all through the day (not at night, but we still couldn't handle it), however my boys were seperate from the girls and this made them crow frequently.

Here is a YouTube video of the crow of a Cortunix Quail. It's not my quail. I had found this video when I wanted to hear what the crow sounded like.

I found this when my chicks were approaching crowing age and wanted to know what I was looking for.

Yes, although now that I am an experienced roo owner (7 out of 8 of my chicks were male) I can say that each bird has his own unique "voice". I have one that makes a pitiful cheep and one that has an annoying shrill crow that goes up and down your spine! (he is the one that I am going to have as my first quail dinner---if I get up the nerve).
