mmm..... I've got an Ikea or B&Q pine shelving unit (think there meant to be used in the garage or something as its got no back or sides). After seeing this I was thinking if I wire meshed the top 3 shelves I could have 3 breeders/hospital cages 25" x 12" and use the bottom shelf for storage. I'm hoping it would fit at the end of the big block of cages.

Would that be big enough for a trio/breeding pair?

Hi,

I would think this size of cage will be big enough, the author of this artical would keep 11 birds in that size of cage.

For a hospital cage, I would use the top cage, and put a partition in the middle, making two smaller cages. If you wish, you could have two light fittings in the centre of each cage, so you can have some heat on sick birds, all the wire going through the top of the cage.I say the top cages because it will save you bending and also, you can see straight away if there is any problems. OK Thanks Derek, will start my conversion today and post pictures this evening. I like the light idea in the hospital cages, will need hubby to sort that out for me though, unless you know where to buy light fittings with wire and plug already fitted Smile

Hi Suz,

You'll find all the light fittings at the large DIY stores, there will be some one there to advise you too, Try Homebase, B&Q, Focus, Wilkingsons if you have any near by.

I would'nt really buy one "Ready made" though, unless you know where the plugs are going to be placed inside your shed, it's best to wire them up as you go.This way, you'll have no unsightly wires to get in the way of your every day jobs. (I got a Health and Safety Cert) lol. Derek.

Hi

I think the shelve conversion went really well, I've got a double cage unit and a single cage unit with storage area (unit had 5 not 6 shelves) I'm going to add the light fitting to the single cage and use that as the hospital cage. Have taken photo's but can't upload them until a new USB lead is delivered - the kids had the rabbits in while I was out at the shed and let them chew the wire. Twisted Evil rabbit
