Moult

Post by Suz on Thu Oct 18, 2007 3:30 pm

My quail are now in the shed and are going threw a moult. I haven't extended there light, but the quail that first stopped laying (end Sept.) have now started laying again - Do I leave the light as it is and let them moult naturally or should I now extend the light to bring both pens into laying condition again ?

Thanks for your help

Suz

Hi,

The annual moult normally lasts upto 6 weeks, and birds don't normally lay during this period.
So I just think your's have lost a few feathers and are still laying.
If you want them to produce eggs, you'll need to have the lights on, to maintain a daylenth of 14/18 hours. If your going to extend the light from now, increase it by an hour each day until you've got 16 hours light. This is much better way than to give a bird "Twice" the daylenth in one day. They will come into condition much better. Derek.
