Seperating my quail
I have moved my 6 week old chicks from an ark where they all mixed together to a rabbit huche with three layers and tried to sex them at the same time. As I am a novice to this I decided to seperate the sexes to watch and wait that I had got it right. The eggs were a mixed batch from ebay but seem to be mainly range with a couple of Italian females and tuxedos. A couple of range birds that I thought were female from their tiny vents(compared to a wide bulbous male vent, I think!) are crowing although not in the same way as the male one. Do females crow or call loudly?
I was going to keep a male range or two and get rid of the tux as he is very agressive. Do I need to keep the sexes seperate if the ratio is nine females to 2 males? Are they happier apart or together, what do you think. I do appreciate all the advice from you guys just donot have the experience yet to reciprocate.
Thanks once again
Jane

Re: Seperating my quail
Hi Tillycat
Females will call loudly if their lost or separated from the others in her group.
If the group of 11 are getting on well I see no reason to separate them unless they are closely related, just keep an eye on your males as one will probably become more dominant and tread everything in sight.

Thanks Suz
With them being a batch from ebay I am unsure of relationship. The tux male is very aggressive and noisy, should I dispatch him or will one of the others simply take his place? If I only want eggs from this lot and bring in fresh stock for breeding, do I need to keep the males? Will the group be happier mixed or are the girls ok by themselves like our chucks?
