Re: Quails
I can't help you with your quail request unfortunately - but I have been looking at your website at all your animals - and birds - what an idyllic place you live - and so lucky to have the room for all your animals - great website.
Hope you soon get the quails you are after.

Re: Quails
Jackie - I am a beginner with quails at the moment. I have a breeding set of Japanese quail - one male and four females - they are in the middle of moulting at the moment so not laying again yet. I also am a chicken lover, all sorts, but now that I keep them in my garden I am sticking to bantams - Pekins, Buff Orpington, Rosecomb, Modern Game, Barbu d' Uccle, Frizzle, Speckledy - but sadly no Cockerel - I wouldn't want to upset the neighbours. So they freerange around my garden. I have bought three aviaries each with a 'penthouse' and ramp up to it - to house the quail I intend breeding, and also have two chicken 'broody' arks with attached runs which will house more if needs be.
I hope to develop different 'blood lines' of Japanese quail and perhaps Bobwhites - still reading up on those - for eggs and meat.
I always dreamed of having a small holding - with all animals - but sadly never had the opportunity. But now retired I have a quarter of an acre allotment plot, so am almost self sufficient. I am in a rural area, with duck and poultry farms around. So my table birds I get ready prepared from a friend - who 'grows' them for me - they freerange and are very well cared for. I drink goats milk from another farm, and get my organic freerange pork from there too and some beef - they are now retired too so are only doing the latter for people they know and 'gate' sales from their little shop on the farm.
I make sausages and burgers, bake or cook virtually everything we eat, so its a happy compromise. I even make my own butter, and body creams, soap etc.
And yes, I can imagine just how much hard work it is - but very rewarding I am sure. -And so much better on a sunny dry day in the summer - when you have time to sit back and enjoy it all, I bet

Re: Quails
WOW, what an amazing place to live. I wish i lived with you to taste all your fine cooking etc. Having all my animals and 4 kids with hubby working away i do not have time to cook as much as i would like. I would love to try quail but dont know of anyone who could dress it for me, the bobwhites are def bigger than the japs so ideal for the table.
Once i finally get a bobwhite cock and start to get fertile eggs, i can always send you some when your ready.
Take Care and if you fancy baking me a cake and send it to me i will not mind at all!!

Re: Quails
I will bear that in mind - but methinks the posties on the way might detour it a bit. Maybe we can swap eggs once we get going. How about buying some fertile eggs and hatching them? Have you looked on the Practical Poultry Forum - or asked on there? It has thousands of members all over - and a lot of chicken keepers also keep quail.
If you still have no luck - I will see if I can track some down in Norfolk and send them to you (eggs that is) I will ask around

Re: Quails
Sorry to hear that Jackie
Ironsun - is an expert of over 40+ years of poultry rearing - and what he doesn't know isn't worth knowing.
Perhaps if you explain in detail your hatching conditions etc and at what stage/age they are killing each other. Mine are due to hatch the weekend so I don't yet have first hand experience - but I have done a lot of research.
It seems that most 'suicide' deaths occur from drowning - which can be remedied by ensuring that there are lots of pebbles or marbles in a shallow container to prevent them doing that. Also reservoirs in incubators hold the same danger to hatchlings too - so they must also have marbles, pebbles or sponge to prevent that.
As for killing each other - the only thing I have read so far is if they are overcrowded - but I am sure there are lots more factors which may affect that issue. Ditto deaths. Some I have read about are inbreeding - so weak and sickly quail die from natural causes.
As I said - Ironsun (Derek) really is a great person for advice - but he might need more detailed information.
| love Quails in Wales website - really is good - and so glad that you got help from Mark, who certainly has expertise too - but I just thought that perhaps Derek might have any suggestions or thoughts from his experiences too that might be of benefit to you, or even give a different slant on something. Just a thought - as I have no constructive help I can offer - only sympathy and support - which is not much use now
Hope you have more success in the future
I feel nervous having read this - what I might 'be in for' if and when mine hatch out this weekend. So far I have done everything 'by the book' but there are lots of other factors which we do not have control over!
