I ate my first Japanese quail eggs today see here http://kooringa.com

As you can see they look very pale compared to the bantam eggs (they freerange).

There were the first eggs and the quail had not at that time eaten the greens I had given them.

So what colour are yours - and do you give them anything 'extra' to achieve the colour?

That is what I am feeding mine- plus apples, greens, a hard boiled and crushed bantam egg for the calcium once a week (you can tell I have been reading up on their diets on websites) mealworms, grit, mixed corn in the evenings - just thought that there might be something else diet wise (i.e. natural) that would give them a more orange colour. But I guess that it will come in time on a good fresh diet. I have only had mine a week tomorrow LOL

I even drove into town to get them cuttlefish - but they are not the slightest bit interested Very Happy

I have to scrape the cuttlefish onto there food, or they don't touch it, but they will peck at the pink mineral and salt blocks for parrots.

I struggle to get my birds to eat greens...they won't touch lettuce, cucumber or courgette. The only "healthy" thing my adult birds will touch is sprouted mung beans (or shop bought bean sprouts). Still can't get my adult chicks even to eat them!

My yolks are a bit more orangey than yours, its probably something put in the layer's mash I buy.

Hi,

My quail egg yolks are orange, not the pale yellow colour. My quail get a mixture of different types of greens daily, outer cabbage leaves, finly cut into small strips, sprout leaves, lettuce of different colours/shapes.

My birds start getting cress at 3 days old, moving onto lettuce/soft green stuffs, then onto the tougher greens at about 3/4 weeks old. I'm a firm belivier in giving my birds greens, and they have access to it fresh all day.

Over the passed few weeks, I've noticed the yolks getting much more darker, this is due to the fact that feed mill operators are putting more grass meal in their poultry mixes. It's not bringing the cost down, but it's certurnly turning the yolks a nice orange colour.

Derek.
