50, so you have a way to go yet
DEFRA
As we speak I have worked out the number of eggs that Incubator MK2 will hold, it is 48.
How do you register with DEFRA ?
Has anyone got a plan of action if N5H1 strain ever rears its ugly head nationally.
Will it be a case of move all birds inside, or will we be all reaching for the black bin liners!
How will your neighbours feel about you keeping birds in your garden?
In the curtain twitching area of the stock broker belt that I live in, I know of one person that was reported to DEFRA for just keeping 6 chickens.
As I have two young children, my course of action if it all got as bit serious would be bin liner and bonfire.
I know that this might sound a bit daft but in 1918 the flue pandemic killed between 50 and 100 million people.
The expected deaths of a modern avian flu pandemic would be in the region of 180-360 million worldwide.
Would it be of use to the forum if everyone had a better Idea of what to do if manure hits fan!!!
Sorry to sound a bit negative but perhaps DEFRA might have some outline advice, that might be worth posting.
Thanks

Re: DEFRA Registration
You can register you birds using the DEFRA website.
I have taken some precautions to keep my birds safe, all my outside birds have runs with small mesh recommended by DEFRA, but if worse came to worse I would house them all indoors, until the government ordered a cull.

Re: DEFRA Registration
Is that 50 birds in total (stupid question I know)
Just I have 28 chickens, 2 budgies and 6 quails and I was planning on getting a few more chickens and you know my quail will be more like 10 -16 by end of year!

Think I'll have to go and look at their site.
My other half said we'd go to 49 so we don't have to register as he don't want the to kill our bird just cos they can.
That does worry me, can they if anythingbad was in my area??

Re: DEFRA Registration
Yeah, I felt the same way ..... I'm a bit paranoid, but believe the less information the government have on me & mine the better
In the event of a suspected N5H1 outbreak in my area I'm hoping they sent out vets to do tests first before doing anything rash. I did try reading the information on Defra's site but it was mind numbingly boring and frustrating so gave up , but my gut tells me that it'll be an automatic cull of all birds kept within a certain radius of the initial confirmed case ..... but i hope I'm wrong.

Re: DEFRA Registration
Hi,
If you have 50 birds or more(of all species), it's best to be registered. There are a number of good things to come from it. If there is an outbreak of avain Flu, you will be told straight away so you can take the nesseccery steps. Secondly, you will be compensated for any birds that are culled.
If you only have 49 birds, not regested, you'll recive no compansation when your birds are culled (which they will if the outbreak speads like it expects too)
You also have to remember that one of these virus can be passed over to humans, this by itself is reason why you should redgester.
Derek.

It doesn't spread to humans (yet) the only people to have been infected have literally spent 24/7 inhaling bird secretions. For the average owner there's no risk of cross-species infection.
Its well worth registering if you have a few birds in case of outbreaks, so if there is something nearby you can take precautions to protect your birds. Not sure if the budgies would count if they live indoors.
Re: DEFRA Registration
Only 26 birds her. I think I would consider registering if I ot near the 50 mark but to be honest I don't wnt them interfering when its not necessary which they will do.

Re: DEFRA Registration
oh No, bringing home 50 of Joy's chicks yesterday has put me over the 50 bird limit. Checking out how to register now.
I put them out to get a little sunshine at 7am today, but that was a mistake. They made one hell of a racket for 3 week old chicks. It's gotten a bit cold again, so back under the lamp and that seems to shut them up (a bit). Every fox and cat in the neighbourhood knows where they live now.

Re: DEFRA Registration
I think with this being a semi-serious topic that it shouldn't be allowed to stray to far from DEFRA issues.
Thanks
Suz
PS. couldn't figure out how to split topic without starting a new thread so have copied Joys post to her 'Andy & Dog's' post in 'chit chat' for replies.

Re: DEFRA Registration
I'm now registered. I really didn't know how many birds to put down on the form so I just said 24 quails and 6 ducks and entered the same figure in 3 places; eggs, meat, breeding (so they probably think I've got 3 times as much). Even though I'm currently 60+ quails and 4 ducks. I thought my average or intention is more relevant than a few blips in my quail population.
For those of you, like me who had trouble finding the DEFRA site to register...

the online form is via this (but you need to use IE and Windows OS to use it, Yuk)...
