Hi Sam,

Male japanese quail do crow, but it's nothing like a cockeral.

Its much quieter, shorter and you tend to only get a couple of crows, not hours like a cockerel!

Mine sound like they have sore throats, but i kinda like it. Its not too loud at all. My neighbour complained about mine to the council and i got a letter, but they listened and said there was nothing to worry about, but my neighbour hates us and call us Gypsies. Its a bit ruddy cheeky though as my Husband comes from a Gypsy family and is proud of his heritage.

But back to the topic no the crowing isn't too bad and i only get a couple of crows a day now they are all sorted into groups.

My chickens make more noise than the quail - and I don't have a cockerel. And I actually rather like the sound the male makes - a sort of cut short buurrrupp
noise (not burp!) its burrruuupp Very Happy

I've got an ark full of the males and they're all doing it now!! I like it and it's not very annoying at all - much quieter than a cockerel. My neighbours didn't even know we had quail til I took some eggs around this morning.

I've heard my out side cocks crowing at 2am in the summer, and the shed boys crow when ever the like, but its not a loud annoying crow, so shouldnt bug any neighbours.
