Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
Hi Wendy,
I think all breeds/varities of Japanese quails lay about the same size egg, they do get larger as they grow older.
As the japanese species is concidered the best laying species, it's best to keep these.
I'm doing a trial at the moment, my aim is to see how many eggs a japanese quail can lay in one year. Results will be published 1st Jan 2009.
Derek.

Roughly how much do you expect it to be Derek ? You often see average lays quoted for ducks and chickens.

Jumbo Japanese eggs are slightly larger than normal Japs eggs, but they both have the same laying potential under the right conditions.

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
Hi Karen,
To tell you the truth, I've no idea what they'll lay in a year, but I'm going to put my neck on the block and say, between 260/280 as a rough guess.
The trail consists of 26 females, hatched 13th November, 2007. The first egg was layed on 31st Dec 2007, but I've carried this on to the 1st January 2008.
To date, 1008 eggs have been layed in 52 days, giving an average of 38.7 eggs per bird. The final result will be known on 31st December 2008.
There are loads of claims made by sellers of eggs, I alway ask for records conferming their claims, so far from everyone I've asked, no one ever has.I've no idea what this means, but it shows no one keeps records and have pulled the number from either a google search or out of their hats. Anyone wishing for a copy of my egg laying trial is welcome to see it.
Derek.

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
I personally don't like the way this thread is going, what if the owner of linked site popped on here for a visit??? I don't think these post paint a picture of a happy friendly forum.
Surely as with everything stated on the Internet, its up to the reader to take peoples claims at face value, unless they have evidence to the contrary. I'm sure that once Derek has finished his trial that someone will read it and disagree with his findings, after all there is no physical proof - we here on the forum at this time are happy to take Derek at his word on his quails laying capability, because we know him.
As for the prices quoted on the linked website, I say good luck to them - I think its super that they're managing to sell the eggs at that price. I for one have no intention of giving away my eggs for virtually nothing , after a year of constantly paying out for new accommodation, feed, the breeding and rearing my stock and developing my colour strains, I want to make some money off them so that I can continue in the hobby I love.

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
Roughly with 14 Hrs of daylight provided and a decent diet you can expect a female to lay roughly one egg a day, never more than one a day though.
To give an example i have various jap quail kept here and in one system there is 16 females i normally get between 14-16 eggs from that lot each day.
After around a year to a year and a half you will see they start to slow up on laying.

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
Don't want to disagree with anyone, but i have a group of 3 females and about once a week i would get 4 eggs a day (they are off laying right now) Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
I've had that happen more than once Batty - too many eggs for the amount of hens, but was told it was impossible for a hen to lay twice within 24 hours, that I must have missed an egg the day before, although I was never convinced that was the case.
I was watching David Attenborough's Life of Birds on DVD and that made me Google some facts and read my boring poultry book more closely - I now believe its entirely possible to have the odd double egg day, birds have two ovaries (probably called something else in birds) with 2 tubes leading to the special duct where the eggs get there shell and splodges - it takes up to 24 hours for the shell to be formed but there seems to be no reason why more than 1 egg can't be going threw the progress at once.

Re: Which quail lays the biggest egg
I've had 4 eggs from 3 birds the day after cleaning out, so no way I missed an egg!
The record for chickens is 7 eggs in 24 hours
