Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
Hi Andy,
Carpet?, thats a hutch roof (felt).I'm only allowed to bring oven ready birds in the house now!
These birds are about 4½ weeks old, I've hatch many of them over the passed 18 months so they are very common.As you can see the hen (left) is more marked than the cock bird (right) who will get a very orange colour after he's finished his moult in about 5 weeks time.You can very often tell them apart from birth, as the gold fawns are nearly the same as white chicks with very faint stripes.
As you can see from both photo's, the normal fawns are much more ginger and the golds are more orange plumage.
Derek.

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
These latter two are the colour i've seen referred to as fawn, the darker one more like the agouti-patterened cinnamon. They're pretty birds.

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
do the "gold fawn" produce normal gold (a.k.a. Italian) coloured among their offspring when mated to normals?

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
Hi Andy,
I've only ever used a gold fawn once in breeding, and it was amoung normal and gold hens. I do know though, that it never produced a fawn or gold fawn chick when I hatched any eggs out, but thats not to say other's did'nt either.
The male was from a batch I got from Winthewitch, so you may get them too (I think this is the colour she calls fawn) and the hen came from Harrie, so I may put them together and see how they breed.
Emma, by agouti-patterened , do you mean the normal wild pattern? as it's sunny now (for about 3 minutes) I'll take a photo of a cinnamon chick.
Derek.

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
Well that sounds promissing if you got some males of that colour from Win. I can't wait for them to hatch now, they are due 1st Sep
Just hope they are not screamers like my last bunch of males (no double entendre intended)
Like Emma, I too have seen pics of fawn that look more like the "gold fawn" in the 2nd pic. I suppose the depth of colour might depend on the exposure/lighting of the pic.
p.s. not sure about description of "agouti cinnamon" though Emma, bit too close to "rodent brown"

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
Normal = top left
Cinnamon = top right
Fawn = bottom one (in Derek's shadow)
yes, that's a lot better Derek. Wow the fawn looks almost ginger. Bit like my "gingery type ranges"

Re: Derek's Fawn Japanese Quail
Cheers for doing this for me Suz, When it comes to that photo bucket thingy, I'm totally lost,lol.
The last photo is of three young hens (3½ weeks old) The top right is of a normal hen, below her is the cinnamon, and the chick on the left is a fawn. Even though the fawn is in shade, you can see the difference in depth of colour between them all.All these chicks will start to moult out in about 2 weeks and will change colour slightly.
Derek.
