Re: Hard work to get three stars
Hi H-A
What your doing is known as bumping - bringing old threads to the top of the board - this is a big no no unless you have a valid response or you are desperate to find the answer to an already asked question.
By trawling up old posts that have usually been answered in numerous other threads, new valid posts & threads maybe missed as they are being knocked down the board.
Emma & I spent 2 evening reading all unanswered post after your original post and decided that as all the answers could be found by doing a simple forum search they did not warrent a reply. Once I get back from this funeral we will go through the forum locking all repeat threads & threads over 8 weeks old, baring in mind at most unanswered post are in the MART section so usually no response is necassary anyway as most deals are done by PM
Thanks for answering the most recent unanswered post, your input is appreciated.

Re: Hard work to get three stars
Just been told off for "bumping"! Did not know there was such a thing.
This computer stuff never ceases to amaze me.
Perhaps Somone can clear up LOL.
There was a bit on Radio 4 about this, some people say it is "laugh out loud", some say it is "lots of love".
The person on the radio said they had used LOL thinking they were saying lots of love, at the end of a message about a recent death.
The person receiving the message read it as "laugh out Loud".
Thought that text shortcuts were banned anyway !!!

Re: Hard work to get three stars
"LOL" is generally thought of as "Laughing Out Loud", which is sometimes expanded to "ROTFLOL" which translates to "Rolling on the Floor Laughing Out Loud".
Re: Hard work to get three stars
awww, don't take it too hard if mummy quail tells you off H-A.
yes, I'm fairly computer literate (I'm in the IT crowd, also both my brothers have/are working in Palo Alto), but I've never heard of "bumping" in that context.
I can sympathise with the guy who said LOL. I'm famous for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. I've said things like "well we're all going to die and it's all about the ride baby", "ahhh well she had a good innings and she was so misserable in the end so it was just as well" or "thank goodness that's over with, back to the living"

Text Language & Short Hand
by Suz on Thu 19 Jul 2007 - 17:03
Being an oldie, I'm struggling to understand some of the short hand being used by our youngsters. I find that I'm having to read some posts twice or more to understand whats being said.
Looking at the rules & etiquette of other forums text & short hand are not permitted, as it puts potentials members off joining. I think banning it's use is taking it a bit far, but I do think we should restrict the use of Text Language to the more recognised form.
I hope this OK with everybody

Bumping Quoted from Wilkiepedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_(Internet)
Many Internet forums show as their first page a list of the 20-50 topics or "discussion threads" most recently posted to. Someone wishing to keep a thread on this first page, or bring an old thread back to it will post a reply to it purely to do this. If they are open about this, the post may simply be the word "bump".
Discussions across forums are rarely isolated from conversations on other threads.
Old threads may be brought up if they are relevant among the conversations.
Thread bumping is commonly considered a breach of netiquette and some moderated forums forbid it. Users may get around that by posting what is ostensibly a genuine reply. Sometimes this will mockingly contain the word "bump" in it, such as "Wandering the forum, he bumps into this thread...", or be a trivial question or response such as "Anyone?". Bumping old or inactive ("dead") threads is occasionally called "necroposting" or "thread necromancy", and the bumping posts referred to as "frankenposts". "Dead" threads that are reawakened are often called "thread necros". People who resurrect old threads are often called "threadomancers". On some boards, bumping a new thread with no replies in order to elicit a response is tolerated, but resurrecting an old thread that has run its course and has been inactive for a period of time (usually anywhere from a few days to a month) is prohibited. The acceptable practice is usually to start a new thread and link to the old thread so that readers can become familiar with the background information.
Hope this helps
Re: Hard work to get three stars
well there you go, I thought it stood for a pregnant celebrity (starting to show).
So "bumping" = "frequent layer"
So "bumping" = "frequent layer"
Re: Hard work to get three stars
i only use txt short cut writeing some times due to being dislexsic but suz being as brill as she is sorts my spelling for me and instead of putting bump a lot of people put up as in up to the top as suz says a way of making there topic first in the list of topics again
