Sainbury's Quail eggs, should I have gone to M&S?
Have just put in the Incubator MK2 12 quail eggs that I got from Sainsbury.
They are quite large and don't look washed. I found the freshest ones on the shelf lets hope they are fertile.
Also put 3 eggs of my own in as a control.
Has anyone else tried this, and had any luck?
As long as the farm leaves in some males I think they should be OK.
Will let you know.
My hand did wander on to the Organic free range Duck eggs, but our garden would not like ducks!
Thanks

Yup, someone else has...

...mmm Free range duck eggs, damn that would have been cheaper than buying hatching eggs on eBay. What I'd end up hatching would be anyone's guess.

They get rid of the cockrels at day one with eggs produced for the supermarkets so cockrels won't be with the hens.

I'm pretty sure Keelan (Kenza's) first quail were hatched from supermarket eggs. I get the impression that the suppliers of quail eating eggs aren't that concerned with leaving some males in the flock.

I know that they sex chicken chicks at day 1, thought that quail were less of an exact science?
So thought that eggs would be viable.

Re: Sainbury's Quail eggs, should I have gone to M&S?
i heard that they have a few males to keep the females laying more often, is that true? theres a farm a little way down the road from me that sells free range chicken eggs to farmer shops etc and some others but cant remember and im pretty sure alot of those eggs will be fertile as i went past the other day and there were loads mounting. of the stories ive heard of hatching eggs from shops most were from Waitrose and M&S, i guess only time can tell if they are fertile H-A good luck with them My first try at quails i too brought them from sainsburys but none were fertile and 60% of the eggs when candled were also cracked, so i resorted to Ebay lol

H A , supermarket eggs are normally fertile but not with the greatest percentage, I sell a lot of eggs to Conisbee butchers in East Horsley all my eggs "in theory" are fertile, i.e i dont have just hens in any of my averies. You can get eggs from there and they will be cheaper than any supermarket.
If you buy from them make sure you buy the ones with the black and white paper band "there my ones" they also sell game fayre ones sometimes.

I thought that Conisbee would be more expensive than the big four.
Will have to try yours next Gavin.

Well i've visited every supermarket within approx 5 miles and none of them sell Quail eggs! Looks like ebay and 'eggs for sale' section for me

Re: Sainbury's Quail eggs, should I have gone to M&S?
Day ten.
Have just candled eggs.
Three control eggs are good and only one of the Sainburys eggs good.
Had hoped for more than that!

eggs
i actaully think the only way they can be fertile is if they are free range because if they are battery or just hens theyre are no cock bird but if they are free range there will be cock birds
Re: Sainbury's Quail eggs, should I have gone to M&S?
Hi,
I went round a commerical quail battery farm a few months ago, and there was only one reason why some eggs were fertile. The birds were mis-sexed at 3 weeks old. Most commericial birds are normals in colour due to the fact they are easy to sex, but sometimes the odd male or two get sexed wrong and put into the cages. You know they are there, because of the crowing, but as they are kept in red lighted shed, it's harder to see who is who.
Derek.

Results
Three control eggs all hatched.
One from twelve of the Sainsburys eggs hatched.
The Sainsbury chick has curled toes on one foot.
Conclusion
Buy your eggs from sellers who keep hen cock ratio 4or5 to one, unrelated.
Don't bother with supermarket eggs, the odd cock may be in with the layers, but they could well be a close relatives.
Dereks eggs are cheaper than the supermarket eggs.
