Can you candle quail eggs?
As zero hour is rapidly approaching, I have been playing with candling.
I made a hood for my mini maglite, out of a bit of beer can and some draft excluder all held together with selotape.
I looked at my wifes bantam eggs first and broke the news to her that some looked clear.
The few lighter coloured quail eggs that I looked at (day 14) clearly showed the air sac with the rest being dark(chick like).
Does this mean that thing are ok?
What should I be looking for?
Am I wasting my time trying ?
Thanks

Re: Can you candle quail eggs?
When you candle the eggs, if the light shines straight through, the eggs are clear. If the eggs look dark and there's a little air sac on the top, then they are fertile.
Usually, if you candle the eggs after the first week, you can see one or two red veins, and - with luck - the chick should develop from the embryo.
Confused ? Me too!

no you`re not mad, i candle my quail eggs to check i`m not waiting for a big dissapointment @ day 18!
candled my my eggs from ironsun, and you can see the chicks doing backflips!
( have you ever had an exploding egg in your incubator? they arnt fun either, and ruin all the others )
its easier to candle quail than welsummer or maran eggs, or maybe i need my eyes testing again????

Yeah I candle a couple at day 8 just to check things are going on in the eggs.
Then re-candle when I stop turning to chuck out duds - unfortunately I was caught out last time and had to leave duds in as there were pippers when I stopped turning and I was worried about killing them with low humidity!
