Re: clipping wings
nomrally you can sex any quail at about 6-8 weeks of age because from then on they will become sexually active and start mating. not sure about the wings clipping not so sure if you can do it young but what type of quails are you sexing if they are CPQ pm and ill tell you all the colors of males and females.
Re: clipping wings
Are they japs?
Normal japs are sexable at 14 days, goldens somewhere between 14 and 21, anything "range" patterned or white is sexable by 6 weeks - males will have started foaming.

Re: clipping wings
I clipped my quail wings after they had had their first moult. If you do it too early they just moult and grow their new feathers.

Re: clipping wings
Hi,
Japanese in normal pattern including the gold can be sexed to 90% accuracy between 14-21 days old, males will start to grow chestnut coloured feathers on their chests whilst the females will become more spotted.
Range patterned birds, including Tuxedo and white can be sexed in a number of different ways, males will start to crow at 5-6 weeks, they will also secrete a foam substant when the males vent is pressed gentley. Male also grow a bulbious gland around the vent area.
With wing clipping, there is no point in clipping japanese quail's wings until they are over 9 weeks old. Japanese quail start to regrow their flight feathers at 6½ -9 weeks old. Depending on the time of year when they hatched, quail normally moult at the beginning of september and at the end of March. It normally takes 6 weeks to replace all the feathers on a bird.
Derek.
