Why do you keep Quail ?
Just wondered why you all keep quail.
Is it purely a hobby ?
Do you eat the birds/ eggs ?
Do any of you make money by selling quail or eggs ? If so, what exactly do you do ?
Just interested

Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
Since I was very small I've wanted to live on a farm and be as self sufficient as possible. I grow a lot of our own fruit and veg and have kept chickens and ducks in the past. Sometimes thought about having other birds but never did. They would of been for meat too if the fox hadn't got them first! At the moment I cannot really secure an area large enough for more hens or ducks but miss having birds so decided to get some quail. I may decide to keep them inside but otherwise they will be in the shed or garden in a locked rabbit hutch. It will be nice to have home grown eggs again to eat and I may sell some later. The intention was to also keep them for eating but I've never had to kill anything before and don't know if Ill be able too so that may never happen (hope the idea of eating them doesn't offend anyone) They are also cute
Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
I think a fair people eat their spares, 2steps. I've got my first "excess" males and am still umming and ahhing abut eating them
Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
For me it's mainly a hobby, its fun and keeps you busy their eggs are oo soo nice, but im yet to try their meat.
Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
To start with I wanted to keep them for meat and eggs after reading that they are the most productive poultry you can keep. But I am now interested in the different varieties as well and they are very comical.

Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
I will be keeping them for egg when I get going.
And may eat one or to a long the way.
I do very well selling my chicken eggs and selling the eggs helps pay for their food, which is great.
I also want to as self sufficient as possible like 2steps.
We grow most of our own fruit & veg. And we our very 'green'. Even have solar panels for our hot water!
Hatching the chicks is also a bit of education for my children who are big animal fans and well my boy is bird mad! So he'll love it.

Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
I started breeding for snake food (much more productive than rats) but now also produce for personal use, once you've tasted home grown quail you wont go back to commercially produced chicken. yum...

Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
Bit of all the reasons mentioned above. I have 10 in the freezer but havent yet got around to eating one. I will but it'll be a really skint month. I also keep chickens and have 7 for pets/eggs and have just hatched 11 that will be meat birds.

Re: Why do you keep Quail ?
like 2steps, my main motivation was to be more self sufficient (meat and eggs). I grow a limited amout of veg in my London suburb (Metro land) garden. I wanted to keep some chickens to eat, but couldn't keep a cockerel and therefore couldn't breed my own. So I decided to keep quails and a few ducks.
I have no problem dispatching animals for food, as I've done it from a very young age. I’ve also had too cull many of my own pets with severe deformities or fatal injuries. I strongly believe that all carnivores should experience killing and gutting their own food at some point in their life to gain more respect for the animal they are eating. Fast food, mass production, and sanitised packaging has only encouraged waste and undervaluing animals.
