Aviary Netting
I've convinced hubby that I need another aviary since it looks like I'm going to have to start the bobs from scratch so I should look into getting some fancies as well, I've been drawing up plans & costing out materials, I plan to get a second 10'x8' shed and have a 9' long aviary between the 2 sheds. I'll recycle the 6' panels (7) left over from the pigeon loft that we made the parrot shed from .... thinking leave 3' wood paneling at the bottom & 3' wire mesh at the top (again left overs) but to conserve the wire mesh I was thinking of just using aviary netting (1.5"x1.5") for the roof .... will this be acceptable?
I was also thinking of making some removable dividers for the flight, I'm hoping to use aviary netting on wooden frames, would I need smaller netting? Are different species of quail likely to fight threw the nets? Final question ... would the flight be better split into 2 by 9'x5' or 2 by 4.5'x10' pens?
Thanks for your help
Suz

Re: Aviary Netting

Re: Aviary Netting
Yes the aviary mesh is 1"x1" heavy 12 gauge welded 4mm thick mesh as it had to be strong enough to withstand macaws chewing at it, so far stronger than any usual poultry mesh .... it was bit of an over kill to be honest as I ended up sticking with CAGs.
Don't really have a problem with 4 legged predators anyway, they have a 6 foot stone wall to navigate and then would need to chew through 1.5cm of wood panelling before hitting the wire mesh, my concern is what spacing on aviary netting to use, I'd hate to find strangled quail hanging from it .

Re: Aviary Netting
ooo i see.i think the quails would be ok with any netting assuming they cannot escape.they are quite strong birds so even in the unlikely occasion of them getting caught up they should be able to wrigle free.

Re: Aviary Netting
If you are worried about them fighting through the netting, then double wire thr seperator panels on each side of the frame work, you use more netting but it solves any problems.

Building has Started ....
I started recycling my panels today .... there looking pretty good Managed to convince KP that it made more sense to make the flights as big as possible as it can always be sectioned off if nesessary .... so its now going to be about 21' long once I've added doors.
These panels will make up one side -

Re: Aviary Netting
fantastic Suz, when you're done can you come down and help me with mine?
I'm finally getting my finger out and converting my large polytunnel into aviary. Ordered the aviary mesh and every thing.

Re: Aviary Netting
Got a little bit done on the aviary today between downpours. The sheds roof is up but not felted and we've made a start with putting the panels together.
The plans have changed a wee bit as well ... the flights are now going to be 12' wide instead of 10' ..... room for an extra couple of pairs of something
Here's hoping the rain stays off long enough to get a bit more tomorrow.
