New Chickies
Well I've had 8 home grown bobs hatch since yesterday evening with more pipping .... here some pictures of the first 5 ....
Re: New Chickies
wow they look bigger and more "with it" than mine. What variety are they?
I also noticed some of the chicks have different face marking. Are those the males with lighter faces?

Re: New Chickies
They're the Northern Bobwhites & a Red Tennessee (possibly cross)
You can't really (apparently) sex bob's until they get their adult colouring at about 14 weeks, but I came across a tip that was accurate my last batch, if you look at the lower beak at around 9-10 weeks males will begin to turn black while females will stay the baby horn colour.

Re: New Chickies
Yeh - don't you just love the first week or so when they all attack/pile on your hand when you put it in with them. I've still got a few adults that do that as well tho.

Re: New Chickies
yeah they really are, when i hatched out 3 i thought wow they are going to be amazingly cute but then i hatched them and they looked even better than all the pictures its amazing how small they hatch and how big they get mine are now about 6-7 weeks and about 3/4 of the size of a adult jap.

Re: New Chickies
What type bobwhite is that Ronnie?
I find bob's really slow growing compaired to Japs. they usually over take slightly at 14-16 weeks. Unfortunately all my Giant butlers died at 5 weeks when the power to the brooder shed went out, yet the same aged A&M's were fine because they were bigger
