Hello,
I live in a small apartment (flat) and was wondering how loud Japanese quail would be to keep as pets. Was planning on keeping one or two females and a male.
Thanks for your help.

i think they shouldnt really make much noise but it depends what are you going to me keeping them in because normally people keep them outside in an aviary or run.

I have some indoors - small breeding groups of 4 normally (which I would recommend, 2 hens find a cock a bit much, 3 means they get much less attention each). I keep quads in cages 1m x 50cm. They make a mess when they dust bath in their shavings but they're not too loud, cocks crow once or twice a day, and the hens just make cute churrupy noises.

I wouldn't personally, but I have a thing about having birds and other animals in the house. You can get used to the smell of bird droppings, but your guests may notice it.

I've kept just under a dozen chicks in a box in the house for a couple of weeks and they smelt a bit when I forgot to clean out the box one day. Plus the Jap males crow, while inoffensive outside, can echo a bit indoors. You can of course stop most bird making noise by eliminating light. If I were you I'd start off with just a couple of females.

Hmm, I didn't think of that - we keep the indoor birds upstairs so guests don't get that near to them. Mind you, I hoover up spilt shavings daily, clean out weekly and I don't notice the room they're in smelling that much, considering there's 4 hamster cages in there too.

ive got all my quails in an aviary so they basically do what they want but as i keep my chicks in the brooder in doors or if i have a injured cock bird or something i useually find even with cleaning him out or eliminating light he still crows loudly and normally the chicks smell so i have to clean the chicks out everyday.

the chicks are a bit smelly, probarbly `cause they eat so much,

i have 5 adults in a big indoor rabbit cage and they dont smell,
the only issue is the weekly dust bath in the clean shavings, and the dust from their feathers.

the crowing is far quieter than the TV tho!

I've found that my male isn't noisy at all with the two girls, but when he's alone he can blow the roof off! My girls make whistling noises when they've laid an egg, but not for long.

i think he only probably makes the noise when he is on his own is because he is probably calling for his girls lol and they are just whistling lol so once he has them he dont need to call for them.
