Help not sure of sex or age

Hi have been given 8 quail (Jap) i have no idea how old they are or there sex all i know is that the one i originaly had is a white male with rather large lump by his vent and he crows.

I have had them a week all together they are not fighting or crowing or laying any eggs.

Ay suggestions of what to do first.

What colours are they? If you get some pics up of the ones that aren't one plain colour we'll be able to tell you the sexes

Anything with a speckled chest is a hen.

they all look like the bird on the top of the home page on the fourm they are all the same colour and no speckles anywhere, could they still be young??? I have looked at the vent area and look like girls but no speckles???

If they match that bird then they're all cocks - the normal pattern start off looking like hens then at about 14-16 days the golden feathers come through that show they're male.

Classic rust coloured chest, that looks like a male.

I'm not sure how you can determine the age of adults, but if he's still growing in size/weight he is likely to be under 12 weeks. At which point he'll be ready for the BBQ

that looks like a male aswell i think anyone that has a brest like that is male but if it has speckled dots that is female you will have to look for a weight and age of quail chart on google or something so the weight varies on the age.

yup, that's a male too. It's unlikely you've got a female in there as a group of males will tend to fight if there are females. You can sometimes keep a whole load of males together in a batchelor group without any problems.

Looks like you've been given a load of males because the previous owner didn't want to cook them.

Yes, these two birds are both males.

Once a bird reaches 10 weeks old, there is no way to tell the age of them, unless they are close rung, even that will only tell you the year they were rung.
Under ten weeks of age, they are easy to tell, just by looking at heir flight feathers.
