Hi, I read somewhere that once you go over 50 birds, you have to register with defra.
Is this true? If so, would i have to register because i have 20+ quail and 30+ zebra finches, or does it only count for 50 of each species?
I hope that makes sense.
Also, how do i register?
Thanks
Kerry

Yes, legally you are oblidged to register with DEFRA if you have 50 or more birds (doesn't matter what species or whether they are ornamentals). Even if you exceed the limit on an irregular basis (as is my case).

I registered recently online. It's fairly straight forward and you get text alerts from them when there is something nearby. So I would say it's actually an advantage to register.

Are you sure about that Andy Smile I was under the impression that you only needed to register with Defra if you had more than 50 birds of either poultry, game or pigeons or a mix of that, but once registering you have to disclose other species of birds on the property.

oops, I stand corrected. Just checked the DEFRA site again. Suz is correct.

For the purpose of the Great Britain Poultry Register, the species of poultry
which must be registered include:

  • chickens (including bantams)
  • turkeys
  • ducks
  • geese

  • partridges
  • quail
  • pheasants
  • pigeons (reared for meat)

  • guinea fowl
  • ostriches
  • emus
  • rheas
