Golden or normal jumbo japs and normal jap eggs Glos
My son Oliver would like to hatch out some Golden or normal jumbo and normal Japs.
He would like to set them around the 12th of March as he has a long weekend for hatching then.
We have an octagon 20 (with a wet bulb thermometer now at his insistence) we have had good results with it with chickens.
Should we go for 6 or 12 of each to hopefully get some females of each?
Thanks
Debbie

I have an Octagon 10 which takes 24 quail eggs which I have just set. I guess the amount you put in the incubator will take into consideration the amount of quail you would like to keep (and have suitable accommodation for).
You will also need to take into account the amount of male/female ratio of hatchings which I have read is usually 60% - 65% males.
I am a newbie - but I am sure the experts will be along shortly to advise

Hi Debbie,
The Octagon 20 will hold upto 60 Japanese quail eggs at a time.
Setting eggs on a Wednesday you'll get the chicks hatching on Saturday/sunday.
I would ask the sellers of eggs as many question as you can about their breeding birds, an honest person will tell you everything you needed to know and probably much more.lol. I would also ask for any weight records the breeders have regarding their jumbo strains, places they've bought parent stocks from, because a result of inbreeding is, the adult birds will produce smaller youngsters.
Always order your eggs from the breeders in advance, to make sure they can fulfil your order and to be sent on the correct date.

Hi Derek,
Thank you for the infomation I will re think the jumbo's for this hatch maybe.
Do you have any eggs available for March? What types do you keep?
I have just seen some of your chicks in chicks playground and they look great.

Re: Golden or normal jumbo japs and normal jap eggs Glos
Hi Oliver,
My birds are laying well at the moment, but nature being what it is, I can not forcast the future, if you get back to me about a week before you require any eggs, I should be able to let you know. I can't see any problems why they should not be laying.
I keep three breeding groups, one of pure normal colour, one group consisting normal females with italian males, and another group of mixed , normal, italian and the odd range bird. This last group is the parents of most of this years chick pitures posted on the forum.Further breeding groups are being planned for this year.
Derek.
