Interesting
I was talking to my Uncle yesterday (it was his birthday 86 i think) and we were chatting about Quails and Chickens, as you do. I didn't know he bred both during the war years for extra food. He had quite a flock by all accounts and he said they all had names, mind you i don't know if i believe that one. But he was telling me about the shortage of food for them and how they started pecking each other and eating feathers. He was told by an old man who also kept birds that they were lacking in calcium and if he could get some chalk and add it to their food it would help. So he got the kids down the street to pinch it from school for pennies and he said it worked. Not sure about this being the truth or anything, but these old country folk do have some good tales to tell.

Re: Interesting
Never had that problem, where we live it is all chalk.
There is about 20cm of top soil and then about 400m of chalk.
