how much should a quail be????????

i know this may sound stupid,

but,

could someone in the know post a rough guide to prices for the different breeds and colours of quail?

Jap quail (whatever colour) seem to be about £4.50 for a hen, £2.50-£3 for a cock.

I've seen both sexes for £7 in a pet shop...but they've been sat there for some time!

female japs are £12 in the garden centre around here, and they sell like hot cakes, they are the only place that sells them,

cant get any other types tho!

av seen cpqs up here in edinburgh in pet shops for 20.00 a pair

When I sell mine in the States, I usually get $5-10 depending on which coturnix. Pairs are $15. I have seen them go for $20-40 a bird at Exotic Animal Auctions.

My POL pullet (6/7 weeks old) @£2.50 each, buy 5 and recive a free male.

There are no breeders where I live, and most of mine only go to families who want a few pets/eggs so no problems with compertition.
I know my birds go to good homes, and they'll be spoilt rotten, that gives me more plessure than money.

does help if they pay for some of the food tho, its all gone up soooo much in the last few weeks, and it seems to get used up faster!

I've never heard or seen of anyone who keeps or sells quails around here......mmmmmm......a new business opportunity??

its a shame for sad lonely incubators to be wasting away in cupboards..................

I tried my arm in the local press with this add "Quail Trio for sale 2 hens and a cock, £40.00" only had 1 taker so far! but it will pay for the food for a while!

there seems to be only a couple of places that sell quail in a 20mile area of me and most of those birds are cpq :!: and go for around £15-£25 a pair far to much if you ask me could be a loop hole hear i think :!:

you cant get cpq around here, thats why i`ve had to buy eggs off ebay.............nearest place that has cpq is a 75 mile `round trip and they are £15 a pair, cant get anything more exciting tho!

shall i evict cats from spare bedroom.................mmmmmmm

i had 7 pairs last hatch of CPQ and i sold them for £5 a pair and the pet shop sells them for £6 a pair

Are you talking about Melbicks? I went in a few weeks ago and they had CPQ, Japs ans also 'Speckled Quail'. The speckled were £40 each! not for a pair!! I don't know if htey are rare but I haven't heard of them.

wow £40, I must sell some over there next year! I've got a few Mex Speckled bobwhites (still juvenilles).

They aren't that rare, just don't seem to have that many around this year. I suspect you'll find quite a few next year as I know someone with loads of them.

I said to my mom that I should start breeding them at that price! I don't know where thet get their quail from.

why not ask them? Say you want to know their pedigree as you don't want to inbreed them with ones you already have. (or may potentially have at a future date).

Mex Speckled is a recessive colour mutation of bobwhites, so you have to pair with birds that have this trait to get it in their ofspring. Problem is that unless people import new stock from America, they can become a bit inbred.

I phoned up and asked prices etc and asked what they do with their eggs, they said nothing, so I asked do they sell them. The answer was no, so I asked if I bought the quail would I get the eggs it has laid in the cage, and she just said it depends. So they weren't too helpful!
I might email to ask about them as I will get a better response that way, just couldn't see an email addy on their website.

Last time I went to melbicks they only sold female japs, the CPQ were whites so I dunno if they were mixed, but there weren't any bobs!
