Just a shot to show you the downstairs of their hutch. Golden Girl at the back, Maglet, Stumpy, Girl Chickie then RJ.

Re: Quail earning their keep...
I'd love to let mine out in this fab weather, but the neighbour's cats have taken a liking to my quail
Re: Quail earning their keep...
Yeah I had to sit there watching as sometimes cats get into the garden, although we've bought some cat repellent as we were fed up of them digging up the veg and pooing which seems to be working so far. We have 6 foot fences so at least the birds can't escape out of the garden before you have time to notice and grab!
Re: Quail earning their keep...
Mine are still in the brooder Claire. They should be hardy enough in a week or 2. I still haven't set up my aviarys/pens (hopefully by next week time permiting), but I like to give them a bit of fresh air... harden them off a bit out doors in this weather. I contain them with a big cardbord box with no base. As soon as I take my eye off them for a second or 2, one of the cats is there like a shot.
Re: Quail earning their keep...
I free range mine when i can. I must admit im quite lucky as my cat doesn't mind the quail ( i think the quail scare her) she does tend to protect them, i dont think its the quail though its just her territory.

yes very nice setup you got there Emma. I noticed the plastic cover you have for your run. It looks rather posh!

Question for Andoy:
Do your quail go up the ramp in your hutch? I was told that they wouldn't use ramps.
Mine are in a pen at the moment with a small chicken house attached, which they use occasionally, but I am looking for a nice warm winter residence for them - as I have also been told that they are not hardy; this I find quite hard to believe.
Any ideas welcome! It does need to be big enough for all 18!

Sorry, only noticed your question today squirt. I don't have a ramp in my avairy at the moment, but I did have at one point. They did use the ramp quite a bit. It gave them more space to explore.

Yeah that's just a regular range, "Blackie" is darker than that. I'll have to get pics of him.
