Re: Quail cross breeds....
But just think they could be poster birds for diversity. Perhaps I shall knit them little matching rainbow sweaters?

Re: Quail cross breeds....
All kidding aside do you really think that swabbing, or rubbing their vents together is a viable breeding technique? I mean could it work? Ed

Re: Quail cross breeds....
I honestly don't know, but if you've got nothing better to do try it out.
I suppose it could be a good, albeit extremely labour intensive technique to keep the girls from being roughed up.

I'm not sure I have that much time on my hands lol! I think my original thought of "if they do, they do" will be the story should I try a male female pairing of jap and cpq. Ed

Hi Andy,
Rubbing their vents together, I wish
It took me 2 months to get the technique right to AI turkeys, it's a dirty horrible job, I would'nt like to do this with quails, lol.
Derek.

And there I was thinking that Andy was going to say he'd done this with budgies in years gone by Ed

Re: Quail cross breeds....
Sorry to disappoint you Ed. I've only done artificial intervention with fish, orchids and a few other plants. Besides budgies bite!
Well, I guess that's why you haven't had any Japs x CPQ hybrids yet.
Derek, have you got any pics or instructions on how to do it? ...just in case Ed changes his mind.

Re: Quail cross breeds....
I'll soon be hatching out some cpq and japs (Knock wood) and of course they will be raised together until they no longer need heat. At this point I will begin pairing them up. If I end up with extras I'd love to try the cpq roo X jap hen pairing. Not so sure it would work the other way around. Hen injury aside, I'm thinking that the hybrid chick just wouldnt have enough room to develop in a cpq size egg. And tho Andy's idea of artificial insemination has merit, I'm quite certain it would be a bit beyond me. Maybe a cage outfitted with stepladders?

Re: Quail cross breeds....
Ironicly my jap hen Big Bird turned out to be a roo, I was embarrassed I didnt catch it. Now I realise my white cpq roo whom by the way is housed with Big Bird is a hen. How do I know? He struts for her and she shows every sign of being receptive. We shall see........ Ed

Re: Quail cross breeds....
I placed an order with a man who says his brown coturnix average 5oz, at 4 weeks I plan to weigh every one and choose the smallest, healthiest, birds. This stock will be raised with cpq. After I match up my trios or quads of each species, I shall use the leftovers to make a cpq roo*jap hen pair or trio, all with the very smallest japs. Has anyone thought of pairing up a mini jap with a cpq? Ed
