what colour is this chick?

Well it's been another hot day and the babies enoyed it. All but the youngest were out in the sun.

Going thru the chicks I obtained from Joy on Friday, I noticed there were a handful that were a slightly different colour. It looks similar to one of the chicks I hatched from my ginger batch ( ginger mickey mouse chicks ), unfortunately that particular chick didn't survive. However in that batch I also hatched a gold/cinnamon (i.e. Gold without any black markings, which also died due to a leg problem), an almost black range and 2 slightly different shades of gingerish chicks.

So I suspect the ginger chicks are produced by combining Gold, Range and this colour. Does anyone know what colour the chick on the right is usually refered to as? To me he looks a slightly mustard colour. Fawn? Cinnamon?

The chick in the top photo on the right, the brownish one is what is called a normal cinnamon, this is the colour I've been on about. The one in the other two photo's is a cinnamon range. These are what I call them as they were know as that in the 80's.

I thought they might be cinnamon Derek. Fantastic!!! Thanks very much. So basically what you call "cinnamon" is similar to what is called "cinnamon" in budgies (i.e. it is a genetic factor that causes the black pattern to be missing or replaced by a dull cinnamon/brown marking in the feathers). That makes sense now. Hence; the range looks reddish, the gold looks a lot lighter, and normals look more brown.

In budgies, this trait is sex linked. So it would be interesting to find out if this is also sex linked or if it is recessive. I've got more than half a dozen of them from Joy. So they should be unrelated to the the "cinnamon range" I already have. I'm pretty sure I've got at least a couple of male "cinnamon range", which makes breeding them easier (if it's sex linked it's always good to have the trait on the male, which is much more difficult to obtain).

True cinnamon could be range + the cinnamon gene, and is not sex linked. There is a form of sex linked cinnamon but its a gene that works alone

I suspect "cinnamon" is recessive also. I think Derek currently has one of these "cinnamon" cocks running with normal hens as a test for this. So if it was sex linked half the chicks produced would be cinnamon and all the chicks that were cinnamon should be hens.

Is there another colour/trait that is described as cinnamon?

I kinda like the way Derek uses "cinnamon" to describe this trait, because it's not exclusive to a particular background colour. So it can appear in gold/range/normal etc. as another adjective to describe the colour. Also, as Derek says it's an old term to describe this trait.

Genetically, true cinnamon is E*cincin, E is "extended brown" aka Range, cin is cin. So cinnamon is recessive, but needs the bird to carry E too.

Sex linked cinnamon is also recessive, but is alcalc, doesn't need the range gene.

I've got umpteen shade's of 'cinammons' now but none start off the colour Derek described as chicks ......... so I pass on what there called.

Looking at your chicks again and they look exactly like mine did. The cream around the eyes (hence I was calling them ginger mickey mouse). I noticed the really dark range among your chicks looks just like my dark range bird.

I have 2 different shades of the range+cin. A darker one and lighter shaded one. So I think there is another genetic factor involved (a dark factor), that affects the hue. I think this works independently of cinnamon and is present in all colours, but it's not so noticable in non-cinnamon normals and golds, but it is only just discernable.
