Shed's Arrived
My new shed arrived yesterday, took me by surprise really as I didn't expect it to be here before Wednesday - so I spent the afternoon hacking down the brambles, weeds & long grass with my new fancy scythe - tried to hire an industrial strimmer but local garden centre no longer hires them, Anyway after an afternoon of really hard work, blisters & swear words, I've cleared the ground ready for the shed, but I've now discovered how uneven the ground is which is a real problem as I was hoping to get a hand from my hubby to put up the shed before he goes offshore again at the weekend.
I was planning to have the shed on pillars made of breeze blocks (not sure spelling ) but don't think that will be possible now. I can't get hardcore & sand delivered before Monday to make a base to lay slabs - has anyone got any suggestions on a quick easy way to even the ground or making a base for the shed?

Re: Shed's Arrived
Way hay!!!!!! How exciting. My shed is propped up in pieces on patio for now. I advertised in the freecycle for hardcore and slabs and a local builder is doing a job nearby and is actually going to deliver to my door!!!! Guess it saves him paying when he goes to the tip so we both win.
Don't know much about shed bases but will ask OH when he's home in the morning. But I think I'd wait for the hardcore to be delivered cos once it's up I wouldn't want to take it down again.

Re: Shed's Arrived
I've been busy in the quail shed for the past 2 days and the cages are coming on fine. I've made a few modifications, instead of 9 cages there will be 6 - 4'x3' cages and the top tier will have a wire mesh top instead of plywood. I felt that the 3 planned smaller cages were to dark.
Progress so far-
And I've managed this with only one bleedy knuckle and a chapped finger

Flippin eck you don't hang around do you?? That looks fantastic!! I'm very tempted to go on a DIY course or something.

PS how high are your cages? Still trying to decide how many I can have - think I'll go for as big as poss as you have done. Probably 5x2ish but what about height?? (Love your little helper)

Re: Shed's Arrived
Thanks Harrie - I've been using an electric saw & jigsaw - was terrified of them to start with but I'm getting to be a dab hand it now lol - Ok so not all the wood is cut square but its still standing sent these picture's to my Hubby who's offshore and he was even quite impressed (he told me to wait until he got back, but I've no patience). I must admit I've really been enjoying building it cant wait to pack the kids off to school and get cracking again
Re: Shed's Arrived
The block's 8'x4' because that's the size the sheets of plywood & MDF comes in - the top two tiers are 15" high the bottom cages are 18" high. I'll be raising the cage off the floor (i was going to fix it to the shed wall, but didn't take the weight of the thing into consideration - so I'm building a thick wooden frame to sit it on) hopefully the middle tier will get more light if its higher up , but at the moment I'm not sure that 15" is enough.
PS - my little helper is my youngest Jessica, just inspecting my workmanship

Re: Shed's Arrived
hehe,Derek - I'll get back with a quote for you
I had to learn to be a bit handy with hubby going away so often and for so long at a time, if I didn't do the DIY, Decorating, minor repairs no one would - being Aberdonian there's no way I'd pay to get a professional in (waste money that could be spent on quailie stuff off eBay - no way )
Well lunch breaks over, I'm away back to the shed

Re: Shed's Arrived
@ Harrie, I didn't get as much done today in the shed, I had the ducks to muck out and the kids have moved my hinges for cages fronts, so quit early - but I'll crack on with it again tomorrow.
I bet your chomping at the bit to get started on your quail set up.

Re: Shed's Arrived
Well Harrie, have you collected your new Aviary and is it up yet?
I didn't get anything done in the shed yesterday, I thought I'd get cracking not having to do the school runs - I forgot I'd be constantly feeding hungry kids and separating squabbles and fights - so I gave up!!!! I'll start again when I've peace on Monday

Re: Shed's Arrived
Yes picked up aviary. Taken apart into 9 6x3 panels so I can make my aviary 9x6 which is good. I always think the more space the better - just have to source a roof (thinking PVC). Base going in for the shed and aviary this wk. OH is very thorough so it wont be a quick job but it'll probably still be standing long after us . Off now to help!!

Re: Shed's Arrived
I'm waiting for hinges to be delivered so i can finish the cage fronts - 'cos I can't find the ones the kids have pinched .
And its rained here non stop for the last 2 days, so can't get my wood cut for the lids - don't fancy playing with the electric saw out in the rain . Hopefully will be able to get something done tomorrow.

Re: Shed's Arrived
Well its rain the whole day again today, but at least I managed to get a couple more cage fronts on Still can't decided whether or not to have 3 or 4 smaller cages at the bottom for selected breeders and a hospital cage - what do you think?
Re: Shed's Arrived
Hi Suz,
Why don't you build the smaller cages under the window, and finished that side with the large cages? If you build them under the window, the top cage will act as a work top, you'll need somewhere to put pots while you fill them up. Derek.

Re: Shed's Arrived
Thats a good idea Derek,
What the narrowest I should make the cages? Length wouldn't be a problem, but I've only 3' of floor space left.

Re: Shed's Arrived
Hi,
Being only used as breeding cages for pairs, or hospital/nursing cages, You'll only need to make the about 16 inches wide.
How wide is the shed, also, how wide are the big cages you've already built? Derek.
