Freezing quail? Empty Freezing quail?

Post by bina Sat Nov 17, 2007 5:25 am

Just wondered if my Japs are alright outside in this weather. They're in a rabbit hutch and run and seem to be ok, but it's been freezing brass monkeys out there for the past couple of days (I really didn't think it would get this cold this early) the minute I step outside my teeth are chattering... At least it seems to have solved the squabbles between the two males these days they're only too happy to snuggle up to each other Wink

I've been extending their day length gradually to try and persuade them it's summertime, but given how cold it's been I don't think I'll fool them (was hoping the light would give them a bit of extra heat too but of course it's only on for a few hours in the evening at the moment)

Any advice appreciated! Considering moving them into the shed where my bunnies and incubator (and a radiator) are but would rather not as there's not much room in there I'd have to shut them in the hutch rather than let them use the run, which in the past has always triggered fights between the males.

Hi Bina - I'm new to quail so havent' that much experience but how about covering their house and run with something that will insulate it a bit. Where I got my eggs from he said that they are more hardy than we think. But it is flippin cold right now isn't it.

I know people say that quail are weather hardy, but I'm not convinced. I lost quite a few CPQ & 4 mini Japs which were housed in budgie breeding cages in my conservatory (unheated - felt like walking into a freezer when letting dogs out) over a few nights of hard frost.

I've now got all my quail in the shed with loads of hay/straw to snuggle up in, and they look much happier.
