If i bought (or probably made) somthing like this would the quail take themselves upstairs to bed on their own every night or would i have to catch them?

You could put their food and water in the top bit to encourage them.

This is my one, that I used all summer and will be using again this year -

Outdoor house and Run Aviary357

Some of them went up to bed once it started getting dark, and others didn't - I used to gather the stragglers up, but in the milder nights I didn't bother, as they had plastic rabbit igloos and clay flowerpots to snuggle up in.

this second house was a great success -

Only thing is I cant lock them in at night, but they seem to go to bed and stay there until morning.

Cool, i was originally thinking of having runs like your second one but i didn't think it would be big enough. i suppose they don't need any more room than the indoor runs do they. 8-10 in a 4ftx2ft run??

that first hutch is 6"x2" on top of a 6"x4" run and I had 24 quail in it last year, and to be honest I could have doubled the amount of quail and they still would have had plenty of room.
