How do quail cope in cold weather?
Hi
How do quail manage in cold/bad weather when housed outside? We live in the Brecon Beacons and it is often a) freezing cold and b) rainy. I keep bantams and am aware of the need for shelter etc - is it the same for quail (I also realise that they won't be able to free range like my precious bantams!).
Any advice would be handy and don't feel you are being patronising as I would rather be told something I know that not be told something I don't!
Thanks!
Maria

Re: How do quail cope in cold weather?
Hi Marie,
As I live in a simular enviroment as you (Lake district) I know what weather you have.
I keep my birds outside all year round, the things to remember is, quail can not tollerate wet weather, and cold winds. Giving them a dry house out of cold winds, they'll be fine.
For eggs in winter, you'll need to supply extra lighting, approx 16 hours pr day is need to continue egg production.
Derek.

Thanks Derek
We keep some Silkies who need to be dry (not that they realise it) so I guess a similar protected area for their house would be best.
