bobs in a bottle
Well, I think my bobs have finished hatching and I've just counted them all. 24 chicks; 12 Giant Butlers, 8 mongrels (with tippex on their backs) and 4 Red Tennessee. Now the nightmare of shuffling around the birds into temporary accomodation while I build their permanent homes.
Found an old plastic bottle quite useful for transporting the little rascals. Hence the title...

Re: bobs in a bottle
mine hatched in different stages. Most of the mongrels hatched first around 22 days, red Tennessee at 22.5 days and the giant butlers came out last at just after 23.5 days.
Unlike Japs, they are very strong jumpers. As soon as I lifted the lid on my incy, they were out like a shot. I had to hunt for them all over the place.

Hi Andy,
Japanese quail can be jumpy at times, I opened my Octagon 40 and the lil buggers jumped straight out........ I managed to count 47 chicks, but there are 51 egg shells so I'm on the look out for 4 chicks. I know where they are but I can't move the chest freezer on my own.
Derek.

Re: bobs in a bottle
hi Suz,
I thought I'd use tippex as I'm useless at putting leg rings on quail and someone on here suggested tippex.
The Mex are a bit bemused by these chicks. I ran out of room, so I had to keep my 3 half grown Mex speckled bobwhites with these chicks in a 4ft aquarium that I'm using as a brooder (the lamp is at one end only). The Mex bobwhites developed a nasty habit of pecking at the Japs beaks and killed a few of them, so I'm watching them like a hawk with these chicks. These chicks seem fine with them so far and are all over them. Following them around, jumping on top of them. Rather sweet as they think it's their parents. I'll take a pic of them later.
They are in for a little shock later as the 4 black 'uckling are going in there later tonight (probably partitioned out to keep them out of trouble). The 'ucklings are sunbathing with my Jap quails at the mo. Lots of juggling around of babies while I'm sorting out the ducks aviary. I'm no good at multi-tasking, I'm only a man!!!
Derek, I've had a few jumpy Japs, but these guys are as quick as little mice. These guys run rings around my Japs.

Re: bobs in a bottle
Next time, try putting an old sheet or bath towel under the incubator, and holding up the corners so that the incy's in a kind of bag before you lift the lid, then it's a bit easier to catch the chicks that escape.
Re: bobs in a bottle
thanks Dave, yes it was you that suggested it. Forgot the bit about putting it on their head. Going to remark them again later. Poor things are going to end up being called the tippex-8.
thanks Nino, I'll remember that for next time. Thanks also for the lovely eggs. They are lovely strong chicks. I swear they can bounce 6-8 inches high. Their parents must be on speed!

Re: bobs in a bottle
hi Sally, yes the growers are Mexican Speckled Bobwhites. It's a recessive colour mutation. Not many being sold at the moment, so a bit pricey at the moment. Probably worth holding off and adding it to your spring shopping list.
