Ginger?
Soon I will be recieving what are billed as "Ginger coturnix eggs" in the mail. Hatch will probably be in about 3 weeks or so. I know from correspondance with another buyer that these eggs hatch out 2 shades of "Ginger" and normal brown. Would love some help when the time comes correctly id'ing these colors, will post pics soonest. I think there are a few pics of these birds on another quail site I belong to I'll look for them in the mean time. Ed

Re: Ginger?
Another interesting thing (to me) the seller described these "Ginger" birds as being 1/2 to 1/3 smaller than his other japs. Waiting on the loan of a digital scale from my step-brother, and will start keeping track of the one chick I have and any others I hatch out. Maybe we do have mini-japs in the US? Oops! Forgot seller also says this color was only just recently imported to the states from the uk. Ed

Re: Ginger?
Hi Ed,
The photo from quailsfromwales is what is know here as a Fawn. If I can, I'll post some better photo's, if I can't, I'll ask Suz to post them, lol.
As for size/weight, the one's I have are neither bigger or smaller. It's possable the one's you have maybe more inbred, this also reduces size.
The fawn here has been around for over 20 years, I kept them in 1987 after I finished College.
Derek.

Re: Ginger?
At the risk of starting the great colour debate...
might just be me Derek, but it does look a tad bit darker than fawn. But yeah I know what you mean, remarkably similar. Does fawn appear in 2 different tones (i.e. lighter and darker)?
p.s. are your trio of fawns laying yet Derek

Re: Ginger?
Hi Andy,
The photo is not clear, and could do with some lighting around the bird. Fawns are a warm light brown colour, one of my favourites.
Well, a problem has arisen with my trio of fawns, the male decided she wanted to lay eggs instead. So I'm on the look out for a fawn male, once again. I'm putting all three fawn hens with a normal/cinnamon male and going to see what happens.

Re: Ginger?
Derek,
I made a similar mistake. I culled all but one of my males (gingery coloured range), and he turned out to be a she. I should have vent sexed So now I'm hoping that Joy can find me a nice cinnamon male going spare from her flock
Glad to hear that even the pros get it wrong sometimes.
I got a bit fed up waiting for my Rcom 20 to come back from the warranty repair people (I've been on the phone to the place I bought it from every other day). So I've ressurected my DIY styrofoam box incubator. This time I'm using 2 separate thermostats:- one is cribbed from my little Rcom-3 and the other is a less acurate one. Also 3 different weak heat sources, so I can fine tune the temperature.
Now, I've bougth some mixed eggs on eBay this morning. It said there were from a flock of normals/golds/fawns, so hoping I might get some fawns (but no guarantees as I suspect it's a recessive trait). So when you're cinnamon x fawns are romancing for a week, can I put an order in?

Re: Ginger?
I must admit I'm a bit jealous of the color's available to you all over there! All the creams, fawns, platinums, silvers etc. There seems to be only one breeder in the US who imports new mutations. Or rather only one who offers them up for sale. And his widest color selection is from his cpq's not his japs

Re: Ginger?
I've bought a few extra Ginger (fawn?) eggs and or possibly some English White if they are available. If not the order will be all Ginger/Fawn. I'll have about a week to prepare and good thing too, considering my recent hatch failure. I'll use this time to experiment with placing the incubator in different rooms and or placing it in a cardboard box etc. There will be 3 cpq eggs in this order as well. The way my cpq pairs are acting it's not outside the realm that I'll have a few of my own to add to this hatch. So everyone please knock wood, cross your fingers, and say a few prayers for me! Re: Ginger?
I have spoken with the man I'm buying the eggs from and I may not be getting as many Ginger eggs as I thought. He has english whites! So I will be getting more of those, however the few I am getting he assured me are from more pure color stock this time. And I do have one roo split to this color, so 2 different colours in one go. And my incubator is spot on the correct temp, a fan makes all the difference! Also in this order will be ten cpq eggs mostly white with some silver, if the hens cooperate. I cant wait

That seems to fit in with fawn/"cinnamon". Fawn being lighter/brighter than cinnamon. Here is a picture of "cinnamon" chick next to normal chick (first pic)... What colour is this chick?
Re: Ginger?
I believe Suz's fawn is the color I will be recieving. Perhaps I should post a link to this thread to the seller! I did post a link to Suz's mini-jap comparison pic, I think he was very excited about them. Ed

Re: Ginger?
Another interesting thing: I have been talking to different sellers, and may have found some very small birds. Not mini's but close, they weigh 5oz on average. A few sellers describe their birds as this size, next step: test hatches and weekly weigh ins. Maybe next season I can do something about not having my mini-japs
