What's the best housing to keep my cpq in??
Now I have 6 cpq, I need to think hard about where I house them full time.
At present they are in a indoor rabbit hutch in my house, I have put a box in as a little bed area.
I can't keep them in the house full time, as I have an indoors cat! (Not that they are any safer outside with next doors cat!)
I need some sort of housing that I know if I open door they won't get out!
Any ideas??
I had thought about an aviary, but I don't have much room and I'm not sure my neighbours will not like the idea of more birds in the garden (you know I'll end up filling it with more birds other than quails)
Or can I do it on a smaller scale?? (without the other birds)
I really don't know how people on here have them in rabbit hutches and don't end up with them loose in the garden!?

Re: What's the best housing to keep my cpq in??
Hi Ange,
I'm not all that sure forum members do keep Cpq's in out door cages, most folk keep the japanese quail here.
You can keep Cpq's in rabbit cages if you make a few changes. If you make the door to open inwards, the birds move back from you. You can place food and water pots on the out side of the cages,( the top of the cage must have a big over hang to keep food dry)
You could always buy/make a chicken coop, it's a simple "house" with a wire netted run. This can be moved around the garden every few days to keep the ground fresh.
Derek.

Re: What's the best housing to keep my cpq in??
I kept my CPQ in budgie breeder cages in the conservatory as the nutters would make a bid for freedom at every opportunity & ended up losing quite a few while housed outside

mine are in indoor rabbit cages in the house ( which is very quiet ) they are total nutters tho, spook at the slightest thing and bash their heads in.
not sure why, i hatched and reared them myself, and they have never been moved or made to lighten to heavy metal!!!
lol

Ok thanks.
Where they are it's a bit dark, natural light not that good at back of house. Will they lay ok?? Or should I think about getting a daylight bulb.
I'll have to get a indoor rabbit cage, so they have more light.

Re: What's the best housing to keep my cpq in??
I've got a indoor cage now, found 1 for sale on the notice board in the pet cash & carry near me. Not bad for £20.
Quails next to the window - it's not in full sun or anything sun doesn't get anywhere near that window as it's at the back, but it's the most light I have at the back part of my house.
Any idea when they would start laying??
I have 1 male (he got the bib markings) and the others haven't changed in the past 4 weeks so I'm guessing I've got 5 girls.
I've got a cardboard box in as a bit of shelter for them but was wondering to they make nests - I can't find anything on web about that.
